From Corcovado in Costa Rica to the iconic Copacabana in Brazil, there are a number of beautiful beaches in Latin America with many that are quieter than the usual tourist hotspots. Except for two landlocked countries, all nations on the continent boast breathtaking beaches – Atlantic, Pacific or Caribbean. Whether you’d like a quiet fishing village, jungle backdrop or a remote island. Below is a small selection of some of the best beaches in all of Latin America.

Copacabana beach, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Copacabana in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is without a doubt the most famous beach in the world. The beach along the crescent-shaped bay is dozens of metres wide and is beautifully situated between rock formations and swaying palm trees. Copacabana is depicted on many postcards – mainly because of its beautiful beach and striking pavement pattern. Day in and day out thousands of Cariocas and tourists stroll and jog on the famous wavy mosaic pavement in black and white marble. Beach bars sell chilled coconuts, ice-cold Brahma beer and freshly made caipirinhas. During the day, locals and tourists flock to the beachside boulevard to shop and eat; after sunset, they dance the night away.

Anakena beach, Easter Island, Chile

Anakena, is a beach in Rapa Nui National Park on Easter Island, Chile which typifies what we all think of a beach paradise. Its white and fine coral sand, clear, turquoise sea, calm waves and coconut palms make it the ideal place for rest and leisure.

Anakena beach invites to bathe at any time of the year, as the water temperature is maintained at an average of a pleasant 20ºC, with small variations in summer and winter. It is still a pretty unspoiled beach, with few swimmers, especially during the morning or in the low season, which allows, sometimes, for you to enjoy this small, remote and beautiful paradise pretty much on your own.

Cabo San Juan beach, Tayrona National Park, Colombia

Tayrona National Park is one of the most beautiful and idyllic areas of Colombia, where Caribbean beaches, tropical rain forest and enormous rounded boulders blend together to form a lush tropical paradise. Best known for its fabulous collection of beaches, and high temperatures of over 36°C, Tayrona has beaches to suit every activity and purpose. Each of Tayrona’s pretty beaches has its own character, although all have stretches of fine sand and clear blue water. Most of the beaches in the national park are accessed by a walking trail. Cabo San Juan is the most popular and classic beach in Tayrona, with shaded palm trees and crystal clear turquoise waters, as well as a deck chair area and a beachside restaurant, making it a great beach for relaxation and sunbathing.

San Andres island, Colombia

Colombia's San Andres island offers turquoise waters, sandy beaches, and a host of beach bars. San Andres is the largest island of a 22-square mile archipelago located 480 miles north of the Colombian mainland. The best months to visit San Andres are February, March, and April, during the dry season when rainfall is at its lowest.

The average temperature is relatively steady throughout the year, ranging from a high of 85 F to a low of 78 F.

Cerro Brujo, San Cristobal, Galapagos Islands

Located in a secluded corner of the northern coast of San Cristobal in the Galapagos Islands, Cerro Brujo is an exotic expanse of dazzling, white sand where sea lions hang out. Galapagos rays and sea turtles are also frequent visitors to the shallow waters off the beach. In English, the name means “Witch Hill,” referring to the small bluff looking out on the sea next to the beach. Behind the beach is a freshwater lagoon where great blue herons, several species of finches, and great egrets come to feed. Cerro Brujo can be visited on some Galapagos cruise itineraries.

Playa Ruinas, Tulum, Mexico

Playa Ruinas is an exotic beach in the Tulum Archaeological Region of Mexico, just beneath a massive display of ancient Mayan architecture. With sparkling white sands and bright blue waters, Playa Ruinas also has a cliff atop the beach and ruins at its far north end, all of which make for gorgeous, distinctive photography. Snorkelling and boat rides are a bonus.

Starfish beach, Bocas del Toro, Panama

Playa Estrella, also known as Starfish Beach, is one of the most well known beaches of Bocas del Toro in Panama. A beach of white sand, and turquoise and crystalline waters, it is abundantly inhabited by giant orange starfish. The stars are everywhere and can be seen simply with a snorkelling mask. However, it is prohibited to touch them or remove them from the sea.
