Over 350 feet above the sea, fourteen, attractive, palm-thatched bungalows line three ridges, built in harmony with the surrounding forest, coastline and wildlife.
Each spacious bungalow at Lapa Rios has large screened view windows, two queen size beds with mosquito nets, fan, private deck and shower. Those with walking difficulties, should be aware that the restaurant and reception area is a steep uphill climb by stairs from the bungalows. Assistance with luggage on arrival and departure is provided.
The main building houses the reception, restaurant, bar, terrace area and an observation tower which is accessed by a spiral staircase and provides wonderful views of the forest canopy and ocean. The restaurant specialises in international cuisine with an emphasis on fish, tropical fruits and vegetables and the service is attentive.
There is a swimming pool (the sea should be avoided due to sharks and currents!), extensive private trails and a wide variety of tours organised by the lodge and payable locally. Also offered are kayaking, horse-riding, deep sea fishing and beauty treatments at an extra cost. Lapa Rios has a strong commitment to conservation and protecting the surrounding rainforest.
A programme has been developed for training the local inhabitants to work at the lodge and a new school built for their children. This is one of the most comfortable and impressive 'jungle lodges' in the country and is particularly recommended for honeymooners.
Note: Access to Lapa Rios is by a flight to Puerto Jimenez and then a 45 minute transfer.
