Lapa Rios is a 930 acre private nature reserve located at the southern-most tip of the Osa Peninsula, Central America’s last remaining lowland dense tropical rainforest. On the western Pacific coast of Costa Rica, it acts as a wildlife corridor to Corcovado National Park.
There is abundant wildlife and the private reserve offers excellent opportunities to see thousands of species of trees, plants, birds (over 300 bird species identified), insects and mammals, particular favourites being the Scarlet macaws, toucans and monkeys.
The 17 sustainably built individual open-air bungalows and villas with hand-made bamboo and teak furniture, are perched amid 1,000 acres of protected rainforest, boasting large private decks with a double hammock and indoor and outdoor showers looking out over the forest canopy and ocean. Guests can wake to the calling of howler monkeys whilst drinking their morning coffee in their hammock, as scarlet macaws soar by.
The Guapira Restaurant serves authentic cuisine where every ingredient is sourced from high-quality, organic, and sustainable producers. Complementing the culinary experience is Guapira’s extensive wine cellar, showcasing a variety of world vintages selected to perfectly complement each dish.
Many excursions within the reserve are included during your stay lead by a team of expert naturalist guides. There are plenty of activities to choose from such as bird watching tours, night walks and nature hikes where you’ll encounter miles of private, un crowded trails in prime rainforest home to sloths, armadillos, small poison-dart frogs, wild waterfalls and pristine beaches. Costa Rica has the longest humpback whale watching season in the world (August-October) so catching a glimpse of these magnificent marine mammals is more than likely and dolphins are regular visitors to the bay. Other activities in the area include zip-lines, waterfall rappelling, kayaking, surf and stand up paddle board lessons and horseback riding.
This is the perfect hideaway for guests looking for comfortable and eco-friendly lodging, incredible wildlife viewing, a romantic setting, innovative cuisine and a wide range of wonderful outdoor excursions.
