Overview

Introduction

A village with a strong maritime history and famous across Croatia for it, a place whose sea captains were respected far and wide and where their seaside mansions can still be seen.

In a wonderful location on the Peljesac peninsula on the mainland, around two hours north of Dubrovnik with the island of Korcula the neighbour in one direction and the silver-white granite peak of Sveti Ilija Mountain in the other.

There are almost two parts to Orebic, the smaller traditional part of the village that hugs the coastline and a newer area slightly inland with more modern buildings and a few shops.

The white pebble beaches here are some of the best in Croatia and face directly across to the island of Korcula with the towers and walls of Korcula Town clearly visible.

In the traditional part, there is a handful of restaurants, pizzerias, cafes and beach bars together with boat rental and two boat services to Korcula: one the car ferry from Orebic to Domince on Korcula (takes cars, journey time 15 minutes, operates year-round), the other the passenger boat service from Orebic to Korcula Town, foot passengers only. This takes seven minutes and runs from June to early/mid October. This one is perfect for day trips or an evening for dinner or to a concert.

Within a 20 minutes’ drive of Orebic, wineries in the Potomje area produce some heady red wines including the revered Dingac. There are a number of vineyard visits and tasting options.

Further across onto the Peljesac peninsula, the mussel and oyster farms, the continuously working salt pans and the stone walls of Ston can all be visited in a day. A well organised excursion fits if you don’t have your own car.

Essentially, Orebic is a place for relaxing and swimming in the Adriatic, with perhaps a trip over to the island of Korcula or across into the Peljesac peninsula.

Did you know?

  • That many people choose Orebic for a four/five-night break, as a beachside escape after the buzz of a stay in Dubrovnik?
  • The sea water here is so very crystal clear and the beaches have a rather special “faraway” feel despite being in sight of ferries to and from Korcula island and the island itself. In September-October, it will feel like it is your own place, yet almost everything is still open.
  • The awesome Peljesac Bridge opened in late July 2022, connecting the mainland of Croatia at Komarna with Peljesac and is 2.4 kms long. It was built by the China Road and Bridge Company, six months early! (especially helpful if arriving from the north from Split direction).
  • From late May until late September there is a state-of-the-art hydraulic lift specially designed for people with mobility challenges, direct from the beach near Hotel Indijan into the sea.

Events

Events

Check with us for specific dates for all events as they are announced locally.

Understandably, the main event is connected to the maritime history of the sea captains of Orebic.

Mid May – mid June - Peljesac Captains’ Festival. Stories about the captains, costumed guides, exhibitions at the maritime museum, special plays and musical events including live bands and klapa (Dalmatian male choir singing a capella). In Orebic and across the peninsula, some 50 restaurants, wineries and wine bars offer discounts of up to 20% on purchases and there are special captains’ menus at restaurants at favourable prices.

Around the 7 July approx. - Orebic Festival features a night or two of fantastic music with international orchestras playing classical favourites and some surprises or two. Last time (pre pandemic), some superb guitar recitals kept Orebic alive well into the evening
