Dominica captivated me with its untamed beauty – lush rainforests, cascading waterfalls, and vibrant culture. It's a true escape for those seeking an authentic Caribbean experience off the beaten path.

Get in touchThe colourful coastal village of Calibishie is set on the northeast coast of Dominica, to the east of Hampstead village. The name, meaning ‘net of reefs’, comes from the original Arawakan language spoken by the indigenous Kalinago people (called ‘Caribs’ by the European colonisers).
The Calibishie coastline is considered by many to be the most scenic region in Dominica; the distance from the sea to the rain forest is little more than a mile. Here are some of the best beaches - Batibou (a 20-minute walk from the road), Number One, Hampstead, Hodges, Point Baptiste, Turtle and Woodford Hill. This is an area of palm-fringed coves, rivers with bathing pools, waterfalls, lush vegetation and rainforest leading to the Northern Forest Reserve and the Morne Diablotins National Park.
The Kalinago people took advantage of the natural setting of Calibishie - the coastline here lies parallel to the island’s only barrier reef. This was a community that lived on the natural resources available, i.e. through fishing and agriculture – and which used the forests for wood.
The colonisation of the Americas brought West African slaves to work in the great estates of Hampstead and Hodges. In 1883, following the full emancipation of Dominica’s slave population, the area became a fishing and farming community - which it still is today, with tourism very much still in its infancy.
