If you are looking for a hotel which is centrally located in a (modestly-sized) town, with easy access to all its amenities, and also on the waterfront, just 11 km from the island’s UNESCO World Heritage Site National Park - affording proximity to Dominica’s many prized natural assets - then look no further.
Fort Young (originally called Fort de la Reine) was built by the French in 1699. In 1770, during the first British occupation of Dominica, a new fort was built by them on the original site, and the new fort became the island’s primary military installation. The French won it back in 1778, and made improvements – but, under the terms of Treaty of Paris, the fort was returned to the British in 1784.
From 1850 to 1960, the fort was the HQ of the island’s police force. It was only in 1964 that a hotel was built on the site, incorporating many of the ancient fort’s features. In 1979, Hurricane David destroyed a significant part of what remained of the fort. In 2023, hotel renovations included the new Marquis bar and lounge, housed in the original barracks, along with a new fitness centre, with panoramic ocean views to be enjoyed from the level of the original fort’s ramparts. The original brick oven and chimney remain a feature in the hotel’s art gallery, which is an excellent showcase for local artists – their vibrant works of art are for sale, and offer a very tempting aide memoire of the gorgeous island of Dominica. The hotel has 100 rooms, inclusive of suites across six different categories.
Fort Young Hotel is a sophisticated base camp from which to embark on adventure trips throughout the island. The ocean-view Palisades Restaurant is highly regarded, with many ingredients coming directly to the restaurant from local farms. Jacko’s Poolside Lounge serves tropical drinks and local cuisine. Warner’s Bar is located below the Palisades Restaurant, and comes with the same panoramic views; the Museum Café, set in an historic area of the old fort, features Dominican coffee and pastries, with both outdoor and indoor seating. The original prison cells are now the Rum & Wine cellar, offering tastings of local rums and Caribbean wines.
For some reason, spas often seem to be located in basements - but Fort Young’s Zemi Spa enjoys ocean views from its two treatment rooms and manicure/pedicure stations.
Dominica is ranked in the Top 10 diving destinations in the world - and Fort Young, with its two boats and jetty diving, caters for all levels. Guests can also learn how to dive, courtesy of the PADI-certified dive shop.
Whale watching trips depart from the jetty, and can be enjoyed year-round – Dominica being one of the very few destinations worldwide able to offer such an exciting experience throughout the year, maybe also in the company of dolphins.
