Holidays In Itilo

The enormous Itilo Bay, with its huge, steep sided cliffs against the backdrop of the Taygetos Mountain range, is the most dramatic in the Mani.  At the top is the original village of Itilo and below, at the north end of the Bay is Karavostasi, which used to be the old harbour and to the south of the bay is Neo-Itilo, a small modern sea-side development.

During Homeric times Itilo was an important city in the region and remnants of that city can be found around the beach areas.  During the Ottoman occupation of Greece, several clans from Itilo emigrated to Italy rather than surrender to the Turks. The 1770 Greek revolution led by the Mavromichalis clan was launched from Itilo.

The village is close to Areopolis, the capital of the deep Mani and also the very famous Diros Caves which can only be accessed by boat.
