Overview

Introduction

Thassos Town, also called Limenas, is at the northern tip of Thassos and where the ferries dock from the mainland. It is a most pleasant island capital. With mountains behind, a sandy beach to one side and a picturesque old harbour, it has a relaxed Greek air, a wide choice of shops, cafes and restaurants, and a vibrant evening atmosphere with restaurant tables spilling out onto the narrow lanes.

The town beach is sandy and popular, and can fill up. But it is easy to hop on one of the watertaxis to larger Makriammos a little down the coast, or to Marble Beach (once daily).

Thassos Town is also littered with reminders of its past as it is built on the site of the ancient city. The island is rich in minerals, and the two safe harbours here meant that Thassos enjoyed prosperity for years, as evidenced by the Macedonian, Hellenistic and Roman remains still visible. Walk anywhere and you will stumble across the remains of a thick protective wall or perhaps a sanctuary. The most evident site is the ancient Agora near the old harbour, whilst above the town is a tremendously located amphitheatre, now under slow restoration. There is a small museum where you can see some of the finds, but most lie undisturbed.

A good bus service operates to all seaside villages and some in the mountains. Further afield, a fast hydrofoil service operates to and from the historic mainland city of Kavala, cost 10 euros one way in 2019 and takes just 40 minutes, making a day trip easy and affordable. Kavala is a fascinating city, with the bonus of easy access to the UNESCO site of ancient Philippi just to the north.

Those of our clients who have, over the last 20 or so years, visited Tolon in the Peloponnese will know Jackie; our very knowledgeable and passionate representative. Having decided to return to the UK, she has joined our reservations team and, needless to say, knows Tolon, a resort we have featured since 1973, inside out. It will come as no surprise to know that the Peloponnese is her favourite region in Greece.
