This well-paced, nineteen night fly-drive will leave you with a deeper understanding of one of the oldest cultures in the world, whose bold and inquisitive people inspired ancient civilisations and continues to influence modern cultures today. The learning foundations of architecture, art, philosophy, mathematics, astronomy, medicine and more are intrinsically connected to Greece.
Highlights of the tour include Olympia, the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Mystras, the beautiful coastal village of Kardamili and the medieval town of Monemvasia and more.
Of course, it is not solely ancient and archaeological sites for which the Peloponnese is renowned. Along the journey you will accompanied by natural, diverse and staggeringly-beautiful scenery and will pass-by communities with an immense pride and authenticity.
Note: Professional, private guides can be arranged at Athens, including the Acropolis, Delphi, Olympia, Mystras and Argolis (Epidavros, Mycenae, Nafplion, Tiryns and Argos or Nemea) - for a supplement.

Day 1 - Day of arrival
On arrival at Athens Airport, you will be transferred to the Herodion Hotel.
This charming four-star hotel has been a favourite of the Sunvil team for many decades. The property has a gorgeous roof terrace with views towards the Acropolis, a nice restaurant and there is a lively wine bar just across the road - great for people watching.

Day 2 - Free time in Athens
Enjoy a leisurely morning exploring the ancient Acropolis, standing in awe where others have stood for millennia. Neighbouring the Acropolis is the New Acropolis Museum, where the remaining Elgin Marbles are on display (the others are at the British Museum in London). There is also a good selection of cafes and restaurants, artisan shops and stages for live performances. The area has undergone a regeneration project in recent years and, today, has a youthful vibe complemented by the historical air.
In the afternoon, why not try a “hop on, hop off” bus tour of Athens? You can pick up a bus at the foot of the Acropolis and tour the Parliament, Archaeological Museum and more. In our opinion, two things not to be missed at the Archaological Museum are the Jockey of Artemison – a small boy on his huge horse, which is racing full pelt; full of vibrancy and movement – and the world’s first computer, the Antikythera mechanism, 2,000 years old and discovered in the early 1900s. Scientists took 100 years to work out its purpose, despite scanning it. It forecast eclipses (lunar and solar) and much more, including the dates of the various Games linked with Olympia, held every four years.

Day 3 - Drive to Delphi
Your hire car will be delivered to the Herodion Hotel after breakfast. Your first destination is Delphi c.2hr 10 minutes drive (183km). Delphi is renowned as the home of the Oracle archaeological site - a treasure trove of discoveries, but be sure to not rush your journey as the scenery en route calls to be admired.
The Archaeological Museum of Delphi shelters the extensive artefacts unearthed during excavations at the Oracle. It is located adjacent to the archaeological site, and it is one of the top must-see museums in Greece. The permanent exhibition covers over a thousand years, from the Mycenaean era to the Greco-Roman times.
Overnight at the Acropole Hotel in Delphi.
Delphi, Greece
Day 4 - Morning at leisure in Delphi and drive to Olympia
Morning at leisure exploring Delphi and learning about the site's fascinating heritage.
After lunch, continue your tour of the Peloponnese with a drive to Olympia – c.3.5 hours/230km. You’ll arrive at your hotel in good time to explore before supper.

Day 5 - Morning at leisure in Olympia and drive to Gialova

In the afternoon, drive c.90 minutes (100km) to Gialova.

Day 9 - Drive to Kardamili
Today you will drive to Kardamili, on the other side of the Bay of Messinia (89 km, c.1 hr 40 mins). The journey will follow the coast road until you climb into the foothills of the Taygetos Mountains, familiarly referred to as the Gateway to the Mani. The pretty village of Kardamili lines a bay in the upper part of the Mani and is declared a village of special beauty.
As well as its beauty, Kardamili has much wider appeal. For many decades, author, Patrick Leigh Fermor called the village his home and travel writer Bruce Chatwin’s ashes were scattered on the foothills - some say Karamili inspires and ignites creativity. The region also has exquisite views over the Messinia gulf, is home to wild tortoises and offers a good choice of walking and mountain bike trails.
Overnight at the Kalamitsi Hotel in Kardamili on a Bed & Breakfast basis.

Day 10-11 - Free time in Kardamili
Time at leisure in Kardamili. Opportunity to explore the Mani peninsula or to just immerse yourself in local life and unspoiled nature.

Kardamili harbour, South Peloponnese, Greece
Day 12 - Drive to Monemvasia
Leave Kardamili for a leisurely c.2.5 hour (130 km) drive along the winding coast road en route to Monemvasia; see striking fortified Maniot tower houses in the wild Mani region and local tavernas serving the catch of the day. En route we would suggest visiting the stunning Dirou Caves.
Your destination, Monemvasia is a mediaeval village, linked by a short causeway to the mainland and is entered on foot through a fortified tower/drawbridge. Leaving your car behind, you will enter a world of narrow cobbled streets, higgledy-piggledy buildings, stone squares with views out to sea, perfect photographic shots at every corner.
Overnight at the Byzantino Hotel in Monemvasia on a Bed & Breakfast basis.
Monemvasia, South Peloponnese, Greece
Day 13 - Free time in Monemvasia
Free time to get wonderfully lost in the atmospheric lanes of Monemvasia.

Day 14 - Drive to Mystras
Leave Monemvasia, heading for Mystras (a 13th century Byzantine hillside village including castle, abbey, painted churches and much more). It tumbles down a huge hillside (tip: park at the top of the hill and walk down, returning via the road to pick up your car). Surrounded by spring flowers, it’s a beautiful place, dating from 1249 and UNESCO World Heritage registered.
Overnight at the Byzantion Hotel in Mystras on a Bed & Breakfast basis.
Mystras, South Peloponnese, Greece
Day 15 - Drive to Tolon
Today, head for the small seaside resort of Tolon - c.2-hours' drive (approx. 130km). Set on a beautiful bay (ships left from here to fight for Helen of Troy), Tolon is also a fantastic base for visiting many of the region's renowned ancient sites including Mycenae with its famous Lion Gate, Tiryns (claimed to be built by giant Cyclops, as the stone walls were so enormous), Epidavros (where holistic medicine was practised – Ancient Greeks believed that, to cure the body, you had also to cure the soul) and Ancient Assini.
Overnight at the Minoa Hotel in Tolon on a Bed & Breakfast basis.
Tolon, North Peloponnese, Greece
Day 15-19 - Free time in Tolon
Tolon’s narrow strip of beach is perfect for people watching. Hire a motorboat to explore the bay and coast, borrow bikes to cycle to nearby panoramic picnic spots, swim in the sea daily and try a different beachside taverna each night... heaven. What's more Nafplion, Greece's first capital post independence, is connected to Tolon by boat.

Naplion, North Peloponnese, Greece
Day 20 - Day of departure
Drive from Tolon to Athens Airport, stopping en route briefly to see the Corinth Canal. It’s a relaxed 2 hour drive (nearly all motorway), 175 km, with some beautiful scenery and ancient sites en route.
