Overview

Introduction

The closest of the Elafiti Islands to famous Dubrovnik is just seven miles away and it is also the smallest of the Elafiti island archipelago.

Kolocep takes its name from the Italian “Calamotta” and is still called “Kalamota” by local people.

While it is hard to be accurate, it is thought that the resident population is under 300. No cars are allowed on the island, other than emergency vehicles, and there are two village settlements: Gornje Celo and Donje Celo with a couple of shops and local restaurants.

Unusually for Croatia, there are both sandy and pebble beaches and the east and west sides of the island are covered in dense pine forests. Good biking trails with bike hire possible.

People sometimes speak of the dream of an island getaway and Kolocep is truly that. After a few days in buzzing and often busy Dubrovnik, this is a real chill-out island escape.
