Possibly the most well-known place by visitors. This is due to the extraordinary phenomena that is the famous Zlatni Rat beach. Meaning “golden cape” or “golden horn”, this is probably the most photographed beach in Croatia.
It is a long V-shape with a beach on each side and a lovely pine forest in the middle providing shade. The tip changes shape according to the wind direction. From the air the beach appears to be sand while, in reality, it is small pebbles with sections of sand in places and in the sea. The Grand Hotel Elaphusa which we feature has excellent views of Zlatni Rat and is under a 10-minute stroll along the pedestrianised white stone promenade.
A pedestrianised promenade made of the island’s white stone runs from the beginning of the Bol centre to the Zlatni Rat beach, through a beautiful pine forest. This walk takes around 20 minutes. There are smaller beaches and coves here together with some beach bistros and several places offering water sports including windsurfing and equipment hire.
From the centre of Bol, for those not wishing to walk to Zlatni Rat, there is a regular small boat service direct to the beach. In the other direction the boat runs to the beautiful Dominican Monastery and gardens, founded in 1475 and still working today. Walking from Bol centre takes around 12 minutes.
There is also a little “toy train” which connects Bol centre and Zlatni Rat beach area which usually operates from June to late September.
Bol centre has a good selection of bars, restaurants and shops and some lovely cafes located along the curved stone waterfront wall. Stina Winery is housed in a vast old stone cellar and offers wine tasting and sometimes pairing tastings.
Tennis players may be interested to know that there is a huge tennis centre with over 20 open air, clay courts at the Zlatni Rat end of Bol. Lessons (in English) are available. Professional tournaments take place (usually in May/ June). In 2022, the 13th International Bluesun Open takes place from 2-7 October and usually keeps to October days annually.
Bol is a popular place and mid-July – end August can be busy. In our opinion, the best time to visit is during June and September, even into early October when almost everything is still open, the crowds have left and there is space everywhere, including the beaches.
