Overview

Introduction

One of the most beautiful of the Dalmatian islands and the third largest island in Croatia. Also the highest with Vidova Gora peak, the highest in the Adriatic at 780 metres. Fabulous views from there over to the island of Hvar, the Peljesac peninsula beyond and the island of Korcula.

It takes around 50 minutes to drive across the island from one side to the other, in any direction.

When on Brac, we recommend a visit to Vidova Gora, using your own car if you have one, on foot a (a long hike up ), by rented bicycle (more gentle ride up on proper narrow asphalt road through forest and meadows) or by taxi.

Also, the Blaca Hermitage, a monastery established in 1551 by two Glagolitic monks which worked until 1963. The journey there is part of the experience, either a roughish drive on a narrow road then a 2.5 kms walk down a steep path, or by boat from Bol on the south coast of the island to the bottom of the valley and a longer walk up. There is an organised excursion from most local travel agencies combining Vidova Gora and Blaca on the one trip.

Did you know?

  • A secret ingredient in cookery unique to Brac is “varenik” – used in many dishes. A clue – it includes wine.
  • Lamb is just one speciality in Brac (along with olives and cheese). The animals roam free eating wild herbs on their way including sage, rosemary and even lavender. Often cooked the traditional way under “peka”, under a metal bell and cooked for hours on embers.
  • The island is famous for white stone which, when polished, looks like marble. Still quarried at Puscica on the north coast where there is a working stonemaking school. Excellent museum worth a visit. This stone is used all over Croatia and was used in the altar of Liverpool Cathedral, and part of the Vienna Parliament building.

Despite being the biggest island in central Dalmatia, the island has a tranquil atmosphere, even in the larger coastal towns such as Bol. The island is adorned with a combination of sandy and shingle beaches, along with rocky coves. In the interior, hikers and cyclists are drawn to the rolling countryside. Notably, ferries run between the nearby islands and mainland Croatia, making it convenient to reach Split.
