Introduction

The long deep bay of Sivota on Lefkas' south eastern coast - not to be confused with the mainland village of Sivota that we also feature - is some 17 kms from Nidri to the north and 10 kms from Vassiliki to the south. It is the most picturesque little port on the island. Surrounded by thickly wooded hills, Sivota offers safe mooring and so the lengthy harbour front is a popular stop for sailing yachts. This means that there is a good choice of tavernas (half-a-dozen at the last count, some well known for their fresh seafood) as well as cafe-bars and a couple of mini-markets. Motorboats can be hired from the harbour in order to explore the coastline and discover hidden coves and beaches. If you have a car you can get to the beaches of Afteli and Mikros Gialos, 7 kms and 13 kms distant respectively via the twisting road high above the sea.

Lefkas is widely considered one of the best beach destinations in the world, with the likes of Kathisma, Porto Katsiki and Egremni regularly featuring in top 10 beach compilations. I would recommend a visit to Porto Katsiki, it’s one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. It is bathed in fine, pebbly sand and is lapped by turquoise water, and the rock face behind it is a full 100m tall. It is a spectacular beach, with the vegetation that reaches the edge of the cliff. Swimming at Porto Katsiki beach is unlike anything you’ve experienced before, and the sunsets are pretty special too!
