Overview

Introduction

Greece 50 year anniversary

Lefkas, also known as Lefkada, is only just an island. Once joined to the mainland, the Corinthians dug a canal in the 6th century BC. Now a swing-bridge links the two again, which means that on Lefkas you have all the benefits of an island atmosphere together with access to some of the most beautiful parts of western Greece.

The east coast is sheltered, pretty and shingly, with pine and olive trees to the water’s edge. There are good views too, across to the mainland or the four Prince’s Islets in the strait.

The west coast is very different – rugged and open, with sheer white cliffs towering above an azure sea and fabulous beaches, some only reached by boat. The mountainous interior is delightfully green with many working villages to explore. Some, such as Karia, are known for their traditional crafts (in this case embroidery). All can be easily reached by car.

Lefkas is noted for its wine, and an annual festival of folk dancing, held in August. There is plenty to do on Lefkas. A good excursion programme includes boat trips to the island of Meganissi and around the pretty Prince's Islands just offshore (including well known Skorpios), the famous beach of Porto Katsiki, and (by coach) around-the-island. You can rent a mountain bike, a small motor boat, even learn to sail a yacht.

They say Aphrodite was born here; Sappho leapt to her death on Lefkas; and one German archaeologist, having uncovered the remnants of a city dating back to 2000 BC, spent the rest of his days trying to prove that Lefkas was the Ithaca of the Odyssey, and that Homer had it wrong all along! For more visible remains it is best to take a car and go to the mainland – perhaps to Nikopolis, a vast Roman city only partly excavated just to the north of Preveza; or even to Delphi, although we recommend an overnight stay here.

As with all Ionian islands, Lefkas is busy in August. Nevertheless, there are not many Greek islands which have (in effect) direct flights, and yet which have retained their traditions and character to such an extent as Lefkas.

Getting there

Flights from Birmingham, Bristol, Edinburgh, London Gatwick, London Heathrow, London Stansted or Manchester to Preveza Airport. Then a 45 minute transfer via coach or taxi. Flights are most commonly on Sundays but other days and odd durations may be possible from some airports.

Multi-Centre

Why not combine a holiday in Lefkas with Meganissi, Parga, Sivota or Epirus, Albania, Fly Drive, and Multi-centre.

A regular ferry service connects the Ionian Islands from Corfu in the north to Zakynthos in the south. Ports of call, in order, are: Corfu, Paxos, Lefkas, Meganissi, Ithaca, Kefalonia, Zakynthos. North and Southbound sailings are on alternate days and can be used as part of an island hopping itinerary.

Lefkas Holiday Ideas

Lefkas can be combined with a stay in Parga, Sivota, Meganissi or Epirus or as part of a Hidden Greece fly-drive.

Inland Epirus is one of Europe’s prime areas of outstanding natural beauty. With mountains, lakes, gorges, preserved stone villages and a unique flora and fauna it is one of Greece’s best-kept secrets. For those with a car, it is a 2-3 hour drive from your resort area by the sea to the Zagoria national park. We can prebook a small mountain village hotel either for a few nights during your main holiday.

Car and Motorboat Hire

Cars can be pre-booked - please enquire for prices. Small motorboat is the best way to explore Lefkas’ beautiful coastline and off-shore islands and can be rented locally from Nidri, Nikiana and Nidri (no experience or licence required) - see our island representative to book.

Mainland Epirus, offers significant historical and natural beauty. Discover it on our bus tour

Excursions banner

Your tour commences with a scenic drive to Preveza, the location of ancient Nikopolis. This "City of Victory" was erected in 31 BC by Octavius Augustus following his triumph over Mark Antony and Cleopatra in the Battle of Actium. You will journey through the remnants of this historical site, observing the early Christian walls that once encircled the city and still stand as a powerful testament to this significant conquest. There will be time to allow you to take photographs.

Continuing your exploration through the Epirus mainland, you will proceed to Ammoudia Village. Here, you will embark on a boat cruise, first visiting the Caves of Persephone and then navigating the River Acheron. Mythology recounts that Charon ferried the souls of the deceased across this river to Hades (the underworld) after receiving an ovolus, a gold coin, as fare. Odysseus, according to legend, also undertook this journey with his companions to consult the blind prophet Teiresias at the Oracle of the Dead for guidance on his return to Ithaca. Beyond the myths, you will have the opportunity to appreciate the river's diverse wildlife. Keep an eye out for various bird species, such as kingfishers, and be particularly intrigued by the distinctive nightingale nests hanging from the willow trees. With luck, you might also glimpse water turtles or beavers swimming along the riverbank.

Your final destination is the charming old town of Parga, often referred to as the "Jewel of Epirus." A popular tourist destination, this village boasts an amphitheatre-like layout. Houses ascend the mountainside, culminating at the medieval fortress constructed to defend Parga.

You will have the opportunity to have lunch along the harbour, swim, or explore the town for souvenirs.

You'll have the opportunity to sample local products, visit beautiful churches, and take some time to appreciate the town's unique architecture.

Next, we'll drive around the fish lagoon and learn about the bridge leading to the famous Venetian Castle of Santa Maura. Throughout its history, this castle served as a crucial defense against numerous invasions. The castle grounds once housed the main city of Lefkas, including the small chapel of Santa Maura, which holds a revered icon brought from Constantinople by Eleni Paliologou.

Your exploration continues with a visit to Agia Faneromeni Monastery, considered the island's most significant. Situated among pine trees, its location offers breathtaking views of the city and the Bay of Agios Ioannis.

We then proceed north to the picturesque fishing village of Ag Nikitas. Here, you'll have time to enjoy a coffee and stroll through the village.

For those eager to experience Lefkas' renowned beaches, your next destination is Kathisma Beach, a local favourite. Spend a relaxing two hours here for lunch and swimming.

Discover Lefkas's famous sunsets on our tour

Your day begins with an afternoon journey to the southwestern coast of Lefkas.

You will then explore the charming mountain village of Dragano, known for its traditional houses and churches, and also celebrated as the prime honey-producing region of Lefkas. Here, you will take a brief tour of the Katopodis family's outdoor honey workshop to learn about beekeeping and honey production, followed by a tasting of various honeys and traditional recipes.

Next, visit the sacred Monastery of Ag. Nikolaos, situated near Cape Lefkatas. On the monastery grounds, you will see ancient stone beehives and the small monastery itself, initially built in 1087 shortly after the Crusaders transported the relics of the Saints from Myra in Asia Minor to Bari in Italy. The remarkably preserved iconostasis from 1799 within the monastery's Catholicon is sure to captivate. Today, the monastery is home to only three nuns.

Your journey continues to the iconic lighthouse perched atop the white cliffs of Cape Lefkatas, the very place from which the island's name originates. Experience the area's unique atmosphere, steeped in myths and mystery.

As the day unfolds, you will witness a spectacular Lefkadian sunset as the sun dips into the clear waters of the Ionian Sea. Savour this romantic and awe-inspiring view with a glass of sparkling wine.

Lefkas is widely considered one of the best beach destinations in the world, with the likes of Kathisma, Porto Katsiki and Egremni regularly featuring in top 10 beach compilations. I would recommend a visit to Porto Katsiki, it’s one of the most photographed beaches in Greece. It is bathed in fine, pebbly sand and is lapped by turquoise water, and the rock face behind it is a full 100m tall. It is a spectacular beach, with the vegetation that reaches the edge of the cliff. Swimming at Porto Katsiki beach is unlike anything you’ve experienced before, and the sunsets are pretty special too!
