Kamari on Santorini’s gentler east coast is the island’s main beach resort and is known for its 2 kms long volcanic black-sand/shingle beach. The long established 3-star Makarios Hotel is located at its northern end. Being family run, the service is friendly and personal.
The hotel has 69 rooms on three floors (there is a lift). Simply furnished and decorated in a light contemporary style, they are a mix of twin, double, triple and family rooms. All possess WiFi, AC, TV, tea-making facilities, mini-fridge, room safe, shower room and a balcony with village and/or mountain views.
The swimming pool in the garden to the front is large at c. 16m x 7m (depth 0.85-1.60m with steps in) furnished terrace surrounds, a separate children’s pool and an adjacent pool snack bar. Pool and beach towels can be provided at a small local charge.
The start of Kamari beach is a 5-minute walk from the hotel (350m) - 10 to 15 minutes brings you to the centre of the resort and main part of the beach. Here is a long pedestrian walkway backed by a wide choice of taverna restaurants, cafes and bars. Water sports are available from the beach.
A bus stop close to the hotel enables fast and easy access to the capital Fira which lies 9 kms away on the other side of the island. It is a must-visit to view the spectacular caldera from there.
Please note that Santorini’s small airport is close by and some aircraft noise is inevitable. However, this does not seem to adversely affect most people’s holiday enjoyment, perhaps because the approach and departure is over the sea.
Kamari is generally a better priced area in which to stay than most of those near the cliff. In our view the Makarios is a well-priced and comfortable hotel for those who would like to be close to the beach, yet with easy access to Fira, on this spectacular and world-famous island.
