Overview

Introduction

The name means “Biograd (or Belgrade) on Sea” and so much of the place really is “on sea”. Biograd (as locals say) is an unusual mix of a holiday resort at the seaside area, a pretty little old town behind the seafront and a regular Dalmatian town behind that with shops and services meaningful to the citizens as well as those aimed at visitors. It’s a really charming mix.

There is also a traditional Mediterranean feel which is quite hard to define. While Biograd is not yet known to many visitors from the UK, it is a favourite with Croats from inland and with visitors from other parts of Europe.

There is a wide choice of restaurants, bars and cafes. One of our favourites appears to be situated within a ruined house, it isn’t! Konoba Kaciol is a family owned and run place so do look out for it in the little old town, one turning back from the seafront. It’s informal and just great (best for fish lovers and vegetarian, pasta and risotto).

Located in the North Dalmatia region, there are excellent beaches, rock-stone, pebble and even a few sandy ones (remember that sandy beaches are rare in Croatia) – all under 10 minutes walk from our hotels, some just 3 minutes walks!. A string of tiny islands sits in front of Biograd, most of them uninhabited.

From the waterfront, there are a number of daily boat trip excursion including to the tiny Vrgada island for swimming and lunch on board. Best to book and pay a day or two before to secure place.

As with most places on the coast in Croatia, there are areas for water sports, diving, boat and equipment rental and there’s a large tennis complex close to the hotels we feature. Both our hotels are located on the seafront and just a short walk to the town centre, boat departure points and beaches.

Did you know?

  • Prices here are often a little lower than in other more famous places on the Croatian coast and the sea is just as crystal clear beautiful
  • Vrana Lake is only 9.4 kms away and in addition to being home to some amazing birdlife, there is horse riding around the lake, sometimes even in the lake, swimming with horses, kayaking on the lake or swimming in pure, clear water (the hotels we feature have their own travel agency and can organise excursions). Bike hire is possible in Biograd and there are marked cycle paths to Vrana. Once there, it is a chill out spot.
  • Biograd has an Olympic size, seawater lido pool close to our hotels for use by all

Croatia has some fabulous national parks and four of them are easy to reach from Biograd, either on your own using a hire car or on an organised excursion.

  • Plitvice National Park (the largest with waterfalls and lakes). Time from Biograd na Moru: 2 hrs 15

Day trips to these National Parks the cities of Zadar, Sibenik, Split or into the mountain villages of the Northern Velebit mountains are also easy to arrange.
