Hotel Kompas

This is a fabulous, contemporary four star hotel of sleek design and a member of Adriatic Luxury Hotels.

It is incredibly spacious and, (we are told by local contacts) that when it was totally refurbished, it was awarded a five star rating. For commercial reasons relating to low season conference business, the hotel opted to have four stars.

Whether true or not, in our opinion, so many aspects of this hotel merit five stars.

The hotel has 10 floors and the entrance level with reception is on the 10th floor. Everything else is beneath including rooms.

Stepping past the reception area and down a couple of steps into the Zenith Bar, both pure glamour (French riviera style) and an amazing panoramic view across Lapad Bay meet the eyes. A fabulous spot.

Contemporary glamour is probably a good term to describe the overall style. There is much use of white, ivory and pale grey enhanced by sparkling discreet silver or gold aspects with interestingly shaped lamps and mirrors together with some rather funky artwork – all the idea of a local Croatian designer.

There is an exit at seaside level direct onto the lungomare seaside promenade and bars, restaurants and shops including a supermarket are within five minutes walk.

The main restaurant and Sphere Lounge and Bar are also on this seaside level, both with outside seating.

To reach the old city by bus is also via this seaside promenade and the bus stop is around 10 minutes walk, bus journey time to the Pile Gate old city entrance is 10-15 minutes depending on traffic. Taxis are also available.

The pedestrianised restaurant-bar area also has a number of booths offering a wide range of tours, many by boat to nearby islands. The hotel also has its own tour desk and can arrange a wide range of tours including boat hire.

On the seaside level, the main restaurant serves buffet style breakfast and buffet dinner for guests on half board and there is also an a la carte section of the restaurant with outside seating close to the waterfront.

The Sphere Lounge and Bar is a large outside area at seaside level with comfortable lounge style seating and a wide range of drinks and cocktails on offer. From June to September there’s a variation of live music here in the evenings.

The outside pool has free sunbeds and pool towels and has a large terrace. Luna Bar is the pool bar serving drinks and snacks to pool-goers.

The indoor pool has heated air and relaxation beds and is adjacent to the spa area which offers massages and treatments together with a sauna and steam zone. There’s a well equipped gym and tennis courts are nearby (not hotel owned)

Sunset public beach (small pebbles) is barely three minutes walk away and is named for the beautiful red sunsets visible from this spot. There are a couple of bars and restaurants there together with sunbed hire.

A little further beyond Sunset Beach, Kompas Hotel has rented a portion of another paved-pebble beach where an attendant supplies sunbeds and beach towels on production of the hotel key card.

This is a beautiful, sophisticated yet relaxed hotel perfect for couples or groups of friends. There are no special facilities for children.
