As temperatures begin to rise across the Mediterranean, the call of the coast strengthens. From the sandy shores of Aghios Gordis in Corfu, Lemnos, southern Samos, southern Kefalonia, Tolon and Skiathos to the white-pebbled coves of Paxos, Skopelos, Alonissos and Ithaca, you can choose from quiet and laid-back to a taverna lined waterfront or a water-sports’ paradise - whatever you desire.

Two of Portugal’s largest cultural festivals take place this month; the festival of Sao Antonio in Lisbon on 12 and 13 June and the festival of Sao Joao in Porto on 23 June. Book early to secure your space in the cities and join in the party atmosphere. Musical performances, street stalls selling local delicacies, processions and fireworks (Porto) are all part of the fun. Remember that Lisbon and Porto can both be combined on a multi-centre holiday using public transport or can be combined with the surrounding beaches, UNESCO sites, countryside and National Parks.

Scandinavia celebrates Sweden’s National Day (6 June) and Midsummer this month. Head to the open-air museum of Skansen in Stockholm to enjoy traditional Midsummer celebrations. Combine a stay in the capital with Uto, one of Stockholm’s 30,000 islands, on our 7 night holiday and discover the real Sweden and a destination with an alluring summer vibe.

In Italy, the annual Verona opera festival opens at the end of June, running until September. Opera performances take place in the city’s Roman arena - a truly magical and emotive venue. Our 3 night Verona and the opera itinerary includes tickets for the event as well as providing plenty of free time for independent sightseeing. Do not miss Piazza dell’ Erbe, the Lamberti Tower and Castelvecchio, not to mention, of course, Juliet’s balcony.

Chris is the Sunvil Group’s managing director and is not only responsible for the overall running of the company, the welfare of its staff, the fabric of the building, the efficient working of its computer systems but also for overseeing and contracting much of the accommodation on the GIC The Villa Collection programme. He is a very hands on managing director, a friend and helper to all, mad on aircraft and indefatigable. Chris joined The Greek Islands Club in 1993, after two years running a scouts’ holiday camp in Wales. He was responsible for maintaining The Club’s sailing boats on Paxos and generally acting as a rep for the villas. Sunvil Inherited Chris on purchasing GIC in 1998 and his abilities were quickly realised. He well deserves the top job.
