Where to go on holiday in August

Local festivals abound in August. On the Ionian of Lefkas the second half of the month is celebrated with the annual folk dancing festival in Lefkas Town, Nidri and Karia. The event attracts dancers from all over the world, many proudly wearing their national costumes. Across the water, the annual Paxos Music Festival gathers musicians world-wide to an island renowned for its clear waters, olive groves and friendly coastal villages.

In the Azores, Sea Week and Whalers Week take place on Faial and Pico respectively. The nautical festival is the main event within the Sea Week and includes sporting competitions in activities such as swimming, diving, water polo, regattas, rowing, canoeing, jet skiing, and angling. Whalers Week in the village of Lajes do Pico pays homage to Our Lady of Lourdes, the patron saint of whalers. Many former whalers in the Azores now lead the conservation and observation activities for these magnificent animals.

The Palio di Siena (Italy) takes place every year in mid-August. This most famous horse race attracts visitors from far and wide and dates from medieval times. Whilst Sunvil can arrange tickets for the stands the atmosphere is best enjoyed from the centre of the square amongst the hustle-and-bustle of the crowds. Combine your holiday to Siena with a fly-drive of Tuscany’s historical villages and wine estates or as part of a multi-city holiday.

If you wish to escape the heat of the summer why not choose a stay in the Troodos Mountains (Cyprus), a UNESCO Geopark; the Serra da Estrela Natural Park (Portugal), the Peneda-Geres National Park (Portugal) and the Italian lakes.

There are a few places on earth that even the most seasoned of travellers will have felt privileged to visit, and one of these destinations is the high Arctic archipelago of Svalbard. Choose to visit the destination in August to experience 24 hours of daylight (the Midnight Sun), to hike, visit the abandoned mining town of Pyramiden, to hear the sounds of a glacier up-close, to go fossil hunting and to join a cruise. A joy to explore with a unique pulse and a magnetic pull.

Chris is the Sunvil Group’s managing director and is not only responsible for the overall running of the company, the welfare of its staff, the fabric of the building, the efficient working of its computer systems but also for overseeing and contracting much of the accommodation on the GIC The Villa Collection programme. He is a very hands on managing director, a friend and helper to all, mad on aircraft and indefatigable. Chris joined The Greek Islands Club in 1993, after two years running a scouts’ holiday camp in Wales. He was responsible for maintaining The Club’s sailing boats on Paxos and generally acting as a rep for the villas. Sunvil Inherited Chris on purchasing GIC in 1998 and his abilities were quickly realised. He well deserves the top job.
