Schinoussa Holidays

Schinoussa holidays

Schinoussa is larger than Koufonissi but is visited by fewer numbers, in part because its jagged coastline and many beaches are not distinguished by quite the same dazzling Caribbean-style sand of its neighbour, even though its emerald waters are just as inviting. Caribbean-style sand of its neighbour, even though its emerald waters are just as inviting. There is less choice as regard accommodation as well, but the result is that often (high season apart) you can find self virtually alone on a deserted beach.

The main village is on a hill, a Cycladic vision of shimmering white and blue, mixed with a blaze of scarlet bougainvillea. Unhurried and tranquil, it has a few restaurants, an ouzerie, a handful of cafes and small shops, an ATM, a doctor’s and a church – the basic requirements for trouble-free relaxation. Various unmade roads lead to a wide choice of at least 15 beaches – 6 within a 10-30 minute walk, culminating in the soft golden sand of Psili Ammos.

Fortunately, most of the beaches benefit from natural shade, and several have tavernas. The island is criss-crossed with tracks, and the slightest rise affords you
wonderful panoramic views across 9 other islands.

Free from hire cars and buses, you can walk or bike wherever you fancy, or take boat trips around the island, or to Koufinisia and Iraklia.

Schinoussa, Beach

Tue, Fri, Sun out; Mon, Wed, Sat return

Same flight and ferry details as per Amorgos, just the days change due to different routings. Alternatively all islands can be reached via Naxos, which will involve an overnight in Naxos in each direction, but please note this onward ferry is not so reliable as it is small and liable to disruption in the case of high winds.

7 hrs from Athens by Blue Star line ferry from Piraeus (First Class lounge) or 2 hrs from Naxos (local ferry)

Schinoussa, Amorgos and Koufonissi all combine well, also with Naxos, as there is a daily small ferry between them in either direction (starts early am from Amorgos and runs up to Naxos before an afternoon return). The  minimum stay on each is 3 nights.
