North Eastern Pelion is unspoiled, little-known (other than to the Greeks) and supremely beautiful. So thickly forested is it, and so steep, that, were it not for the glistening Aegean below, it could be a cross between an ancient British woodland and the Alps!
The beaches here are stunning and the swimming lovely in a clean open sea, but this can be lively, so the more sheltered western Pelion may be better for children or non-swimmers.
Agios Ioannis is the nearest this spectacular region has to a resort. The village has three fine sand-shingle beaches which inevitably get busy during Greek holiday weekends and in the peak season. It has a number of small hotels and a good choice of restaurants, cafe-bars and village shops.
3 kms to the south - a pleasant 50 minute walk above Papa Nero beach - brings you to the delightfully pretty small harbour of Damouchari boasting a ruined Venetian fort perched above a beautiful bay and a pristine pebble beach. There are four tavernas to choose from for lunch.
On the mountainside above, high above the sea, the large village of Tsangarada spreads out amongst the trees. Famed for its impressive main square, church and enormous plane tree (reputedly 1000 years old!) Tsangarada's mix of mountain, forest, beautiful old buildings and dizzy vies to the deep blue sea below epitomise the attractions of north eastern Pelion. A number of walking trails start from here, taking you to other historic and traditional mountain villages.
