Overview

Introduction

Also known by its Turkish name of Mourtos (they were masters here until 1913) Sivota is in Epirus, the mountainous region of the north west. This is one of the loveliest areas of Greece – green, scenic and traditional.

Sivota enjoys a setting of remarkable natural beauty. All around are hills blanketed by pine, cypress and olive, the trees in many places reaching the water’s edge. The twisting coastline is indented with rocky coves, sandy bays, and stretches of almost white coarse and fine shingle beach such as Mega Ammos a mile outside the village.

Just off-shore are three wooded islets with beaches of their own, great fun to explore by boat, maybe taking a picnic. The hire of a small motorboat is recommended and is the best way to reach not only the islets in the bay but also nearby hidden beaches. A water-taxi will also take you inexpensively.

Sivota has in recent years become increasingly popular and so the village, harbour and beaches bustle with life over weekends and especially during Greek holiday periods. Although now a thriving small resort, Sivota has managed to retain its Greek village character.

The harbour is pretty as a picture, with an array of cafés and restaurants (some quite smart), small shops, and often a flotilla moored at the quay. A ten minute flat walk (no hills) brings you to the upperpart of the village, with church, stores and more tavernas.

The nearest beach, Gallikos Malos is just over the headland from the harbour - it is a sand/shingle beach with crystal clear waters, organised sunbeds and a local taverna. We highly recommend this beach for evening swims, the scene is particularly splendid as the sun sets below the horizon. Many other beaches can be reached in a 10-15 minute walk in either direction.

Excursions run (subject to demand) by boat to Paxos and Zagoria, days out on a private sailing boat, luxury yacht or rib, sunset cruise, by 4x4 off road trips to the mountains and remote beaches. There are boat rentals and watersports from Mega Ammos beach and a dive school based in the village.

There is a limited bus service, so if you want to make the most of the area the hire of a car would be a good idea.

Some wonderful areas then become accessible, including the inland lakeside town of Ioannina; the preserved mountain villages of Zagorochoria; even the ‘monasteries of the air’ of the meteora, one of greece's most impressive sites. All can now be done in a day using the new fast Via egnatia highway.

Getting there

Flights from Birmingham, Bristol, London Gatwick, Stansted or Manchester to Preveza Airport. Then a 90 minute transfer via coach or taxi. Flights are most commonly on Sundays but other days and odd durations may be possible from some airports.

Sivota Beaches

Sivota has a string of excellent beaches easily reachable to either side of the village, or hidden on the offshore islets. these range from long stretches of sand/shingle such as popular mega ammos a mile to the south which has three tavernas and organised sunbeds, to smaller peaceful bays such as delightful Deh (pronounced Day-ee) to the north, which is named after the greek electricity company due to the siting of a nearby pylon! It's particularly fun to visit Bella Vraka beach which is reached by fording across the narrow channel from the mainland. Many are accessible by foot, or alternatively, Sivota's watertaxi will give you a beach tour and, once you have picked a favourite, pick you up later.

Claire Kalatzis

Claire joined us in 2005 after having spent 6 years in Lesbos running her own business teaching English, where she married a Greek. The economic crisis in Greece forced them to return to the UK. Alongside day to day reservations, Claire is also mother goose to our 30 or so overseas representatives in Greece and works very closely with Graeme, our overseas manager in Greece, to arrange for their interviewing and training. Understandably she loves Alonissos.
