A luxurious and contemporary five star, air conditioned villa which is the dream-come-true for a local young couple from the island. They inherited the land and decided to create a wonderful holiday home using local stone and wood where possible and following ecological principles. The villa is a member of The Travel Sustainable programme, welcomed its first guests in 2021 and already there were repeat guests in 2022. Solar panels are being installed during winter 2022/2023.
Ca Veia is truly exceptional and one of the best villas we have ever seen in Croatia with incredible attention to detail yet with a relaxed, stylish and a touch funky vibe. There are five ensuite bedrooms offering a total occupancy of 10 adults plus one child aged up to two years old.
There are vast common spaces allowing a large group or family to socialise, relax, or party.
The owners have compiled a superb and fully comprehensive guide to the area and the region with useful advice, tips and contact details – from the best beaches to how to hire a car – or a boat! A private chef can be booked in advance, this can be either at time of booking or immediately with host on arrival at the villa and is subject to availability (may not be available in high season due to peak booking and demand). The villa is non-smoking and smoking is only allowed in the garden or at the outside terrace.
It is located in a lovely wooded clearing in the small hamlet of Garica on the island of Krk in Croatia’s Kvarner Region and the island can be accessed via a road bridge to the mainland or by catamarans from the mainland and other islands or by ferry from the island of Rab to the south of Krk.
The island has it’s own international airport, Rijeka with direct flights from London and is under 30 minutes drive from the property. Pula and Zagreb airports are also convenient for this villa.
The nearest beach is at Sveti Marak near Vrbnik around 10 minutes drive and, unusually for Croatia, the beach is mainly sandy and there is a beach bar and watersports are on offer. The nearest small town is Vrbnik, under 15 minutes drive, famous for its wine heritage and a lovely spot offering bars, restaurants, shops, markets, pharmacy and post office.
The villa
On the ground floor there is a huge open plan kitchen-dining area and lounge with huge windows and views out over the pool and terrace.
The kitchen is very well equipped, state-of-the-art with electric oven and hob, dishwasher, American style fridge, wine fridge, kettle, microwave, Krups coffee machine. A beautiful, long dining table allows interaction with those cooking and has high seating. Iva and Dominic, owners of the villa wanted “a little bit of all Croatia here” and scoured the country for pieces they could use at the villa. In the far east of Croatia, in the Slavonia region they found an old derelict house and brought part of a huge wooden floor back to Krk island to craft into the wonderful dining table.
The lounge area has comfortable seating together with satellite TV (including Netflix), sound system, DVD player. There is free WiFi throughout.
Outside on the terrace by the pool there is another dining area with a table for 10 created from old roof beams from another rustic property. There is a proper barbeque-grill here (starter pack of wood and charcoal provided, further supplies should be bought), a sink and a traditional “peka” ( a special way of cooking using a large metal bell where the meat, vegetables, fish are slowly cooked on glowing embers under the bell).
The infinity pool, heated up to 26C, has comfortable sofa style seating on the terrace and sunbeds with hydro massage feature in the pool. It is cleaned weekly. Pool towels are provided.
Quirky? The villa takes its name from a mix of the past. This area of modern day Croatia was under Venetian rule until the time of Napoleon. ”Ca Veia” means “house of Krk” in old Venetian dialect (“ca” being a short version of “casa”).
On points of safety, there is CCTV, a safe in the utility room where there is also a washing machine and dryer, fresh linen, washing products and pool towels. Each guest receives an alarm pin for the property, explained by the host greeting them on arrival. Also an additional toilet on the ground floor.
The garden is distinctly Mediterranean with a herb section featuring thyme, mint, basil, sage, rosemary and pomegranate, olive and fig trees – and all can be used by guests.
The bedrooms
All bedrooms have bathrooms with walk-in showers and hairdryer. All bedrooms have double beds although two of these can be twin rooms, please request at time of booking. All have balcony except for the ground floor bedroom (which has the pool instead!)
Ground floor
There is one stylish, ensuite double bedroom in a lovely stone building with an entrance from the terrace. The other entrance may be of more interest to some as a door leads directly from the bedroom, down a step and directly into the pool.
First floor
There are four stylish, ensuite double bedrooms, all with balcony. All have bathrooms with walk-in showers and hairdryer. Two of the bathrooms also have bidet. Two of the bedrooms can be arranged with twin beds. Please request at time of booking. A small sofa-bed is available for a child under the age of two in one room. (Villa maximum occupancy of 11 including 10 adults and one child under the age of two)
The very special lower ground floor
This is a truly brilliant idea of the owners, Iva and Dominic. They wanted to create a multi purpose space that would offer various options that could enhance a holiday. It is a huge multi-media room with cinema facilities and a massive film screen-wall plus projector. Playstation, Netflix etc – all are here. There is lounge style seating and huge cushions.
At the rear of the room there is a movable, built-in table perfect for a party or celebration and previous guests have ordered outside catering and a DJ for a birthday celebration. Other guests have used the room as a Yoga studio (mats provided) or for massage facilities (can be booked in advance or while in residence).
Around and close to the villa
A small supermarket is just 100 metres away in the hamlet of Garica where the villa is located.
Vrbnik is around eight minutes drive and Malinska is around 15 minutes. Both offer food markets (including fish market-best before 0900) , a selection of shops, bars, restaurants, bakery, pharmacy, post office and restaurants. In both Vrbnik and Malinska there are restaurants offering delivery service to the villa. Doctor’s surgery and clinic is in Krk town, around 20 minutes drive. All this information – and much more – is in the villa guide folder located at the property.
Out and about
Because of the villa’s location roughly in the centre of the island of Krk, so much is easy to visit including beaches (Baska with two kilometres long of pebble and sand is just 25 minutes drive) with the lovely sandy Sveti Marak beach near Vrbnik just ten minutes away.
The diversity is incredible from the walled island capital of Krk Town with it’s towers, ramparts and Roman ruins to the wild and beautiful hiking and walking paths and other lovely seaside spots including Malinska, Omisalj, Njivice, Baska and Stari Baska. There are a number of boat trips from the harbour at Krk Town.
Across the road bridge to the mainland means that the stunning Opatija Riviera is easy in around an hour and the foothills of Risjnak National Park in under two hours. Both easy for a day trip.
The ferry port of Valbiska is under 30 minutes drive and a 25 minute ferry crossing can take guests to the islands of Cres and Losinj for a day trip or with a 90 minute crossing to the island of Rab to the south
There are many villas for visitors to rent all around the Mediterranean. Many are excellent yet many are just a mish-mash of furniture with little real thought to the feeling of the place. Villa Ca Veia is different. It was designed for the owners Iva and Dominic by local architects and according to their specification and dreams. They live and work abroad and hope that, one day, Villa Ca Veia will be their retirement home. They occasionally take a short holiday here themselves if the place is not booked. This is a truly stunning home and perfect for a relaxing stay in the middle of nature with the blue Adriatic sea close by. And what of Krk island? Mention it in the UK and few people will have heard of it. That is because it (and the nearby Kvarner Bay islands) are some of Croatia’s best kept secrets.
