The drive along the coast from Dubrovnik to Split is one of the most spectacular in Croatia. An added bonus being that the 2.4 km long Peljesac Bridge opened in late July 2022, avoiding the bottleneck presented by the tiny piece of coastline belonging to Bosnia Herzegovina where passports were required at the border crossing.
The distance between the two cities is 229 kilometres and we have chosen two 4 night stays on the way on Korcula, a beautiful island just off the Peljesac peninsula and Tucepi on the Makarska Riviera.
With the independence of your own self drive car at your disposal you will have the flexibility to explore an extensive part of the coastline and can take the car across to the island of Korcula from Orebic on the coast. From Makarska (a nine-minute drive from Tucepi) there is a car ferry to Sumartin on the island of Brac if you wish to explore further by including this lesser known Dalmatian island with many hidden beaches.

Day 1 - Day of arrival
The transfer from Dubrovnik Airport to the hotel will take approximately 30 minutes depending on traffic. The 3 star Hotel Aquarius is owned and run by a Croatian family. It stands at the end of a beautiful garden housing the outdoor pool and terrace with trees and shrubs surrounding. The hotel is in the Lapad Bay area with its many shops, cafes and restaurants. It's an easy stroll from the hotel to where it’s all happening. So, take advantage of this first day to get your bearings. Dinner can be taken on the hotel’s outdoor terrace or at one of the many restaurants in Lapad Bay.

Day 2 - Exploring Dubrovnik Old Town
It takes around 15 minutes by bus from a bus stop near the hotel Aquarius to Dubrovnik Old Town, by far the easiest and cheapest way of getting there. Make an early start because you will need the whole day to explore the Old Town, as there is much to see and experience. Dubrovnik is the most famous walled city on the sea in Europe and, if you have the energy, then a walk on the massive ramparts that surround the old town is a must. At a reasonable pace, this takes around 1.5 hours, longer if you stroll. Stalls selling cold drinks are located in a couple of spots on the walls. From there you will have a panoramic view of the Old Town, the Adriatic sea and the Napoleonic fortress on Mount Srdj behind the city. Dubrovnik’s old city, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is possibly the most famous place in Croatia and a popular stop for cruise ships and therefore, understandably, it is often busy. Best times to visit are from 8.30am or after 3.30pm. The early spring months March and April can be a little quieter. We can arrange a guided tour or you can simply explore on your own.
Don’t miss the Sponza and Rector’s palaces, Dominican and Franciscan monasteries, the old pharmacy, the Rupe museum, one of the oldest synagogues in Europe and the Orthodox church. In recent years, Dubrovnik gained fame as the film set for Game of Thrones and Star Wars and there are special themed tours.

Day 3 - Day at leisure in Dubrovnik
If you did not cover the essentials of the Old Town on your second day, then you can, of course, return for a further look. Otherwise, why not take the shuttle boat from the small old city port to nearby Lokrum island (10 minutes away), see the monastery, the botanical garden and have a swim and a wander there. Day trips by boat are also available to the Elafiti islands (Lopud, Kolocep and Sipan). A short walk away from the hotel you will find stalls offering a wide variety of local excursions so do have a walk and browse. Our local agent can also book these excursions for you.

Day 4 - Drive to the island of Korcula and the Hotel Aminess Liburna
Your car will be delivered to the hotel at around 10.00 and the drive to Orebic from where the car ferry departs for Korcula and the Hotel Aminess Liburna will take approximately two and a half hours. The shuttle car ferry from Orebic to Korcula takes 15 minutes. Tickets are purchased locally.
It is a few minutes drive from where the ferry docks to your hotel. The Aminess Liburna is a spacious 4-star hotel located on a very slight incline providing wonderful views across the Adriatic Sea to the walled town of Korcula (a 10 minute walk away) and beyond to the mainland and the Peljesac peninsula.

Day 5-7 - Days at leisure exploring the island of Korcula and Orebic on the mainland
Korcula is the sixth largest of the Croatian islands, with almost 200 coves and beaches, a few of them sandy. The island is famous for olive and wine production with white wines especially prominent. Two names to look out for are Posip and Grk and tours of the mainly family-owned wineries are possible. Lovers of red wine should take the seven-minute passenger boat crossing (early June-late September) over to the mainland village of Orebic and continue to some award winning, family run vineyards and winemakers producing mainly the heady red Dingac and Plavac Mali wines. No matter what time of the year the trip across is worth taking as there is good crystal clear water speaking around Orebic and the village itself is charming.
Korcula walled Town is known for three things: the fascinating herringbone pattern of narrow streets ensuring cooling breezes in hot summers, the amazing Moreska Sword Dance and the alleged birthplace of explorer and traveller Marco Polo. Water taxi services take visitors to nearby tiny islands including Badija with its Franciscan monastery and pretty beaches, perfect for a picnic, put together from the town’s fresh open market (daily from 0600-11). There is also a hop-on-hop off islands service with details available at the water taxi points.

Day 8 - Drive from Korcula to Tucepi
The drive from Korcula to Tucepi and the Villa Marija Hotel will take two hours 45 minutes and the most direct route is to take the new Peljesac bridge across the water and then continue northwards on the Adriatic road following signs for split. This is a small, family run, four star hotel with a long tradition in welcoming guests and many return each year. Until late 2021 a grandmother was still helping the chef in the kitchen and greeting guests at reception. The tradition continues with family members still working at the hotel. The outdoor terrace with its palm trees is a popular place for morning coffee or drinks at sunset. So make the most of the location after your drive.

Day 9-11 - Days at leisure exploring Tucepi and further afield
Tucepi is a small seaside town on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Makarska Riviera. From the hotel it is less than a five minute stroll down to the pebble beach, shops, cafe bars and marina from where there are daily fish picnic excursion boats to the islands. If you seek more fun and action, then the lively resort of Makarska is a nine minute drive away. From Makarska you can also take the car ferry across to Sumartin on the island of Brac.

Day 12 - Drive from Tucepi to Split
Your drive from Tucepi to the Hotel Cvita will take about one and a half hours. The Cvita is located away from the centre of Split and in an area that locals call the “Beverly Hills of Split”, it is on the southern slopes of Marjan Hill surrounded by pine forest. While within easy reach of the centre by bus or taxi, the hotel is situated on a steep slope which may be worth considering if there are mobility challenges. Walking down to the Old Town will take 20 minutes and longer on the way up!
We recommend taking a taxi (£5 approx ) or the local bus down to the old town. The old town at night is thronged with people. Lights illuminate the remains of what was once the Palace of the Roman emperor Diocletian and is now the old town as homes, shops, restaurants and bars are entwined/contained within the walls and buildings of what constituted the palace. Take your evening meals in one of the many squares and savour the atmosphere. The experience is extraordinary.

Day 13 - Day at leisure in Split
Daytime in the Old Town is even more fascinating and it’s a marvel as to how all the buildings weave themselves into the labyrinth of the ruins of this enormous palace. This is one of the most imposing Roman structures in existence today, an open air living museum. Certainly book a guided tour as this will be an unforgettable experience.

Day 14 - Visit Trogir Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site
Use your last day to drive to Trogir. It’s about a forty minute drive from Split. Trogir is like a mini Dubrovnik. Trogir old town is a UNESCO Heritage listed site and is known for its mix of Renaissance, Baroque and Romanesque buildings and is set on a small island connected to the mainland and the island of Ciovo by bridges. Parking in Trogir is difficult. The only sizeable car park is near the market. You can park here and then walk over the footbridge to the Old Town.
This fly-drive itinerary covers a good amount of the Dalmatian coast, includes some of the main islands and reflects the beauty and historical significance of Croatia. It can, of course, be extended to cover the national parks of Krka and Plitvice and the coast as far as Porec and the borders with Slovenia.

Day 15 - Day of departure
For your flight home, Split Airport is modern, easy to navigate and a 40 minute drive from the hotel. The car can be left at the airport.
