North of the Polar Circle, winter sees Lannavaara plunged into darkness for one month (mid December to mid January), when the sun does not rise above the horizon, whilst the spring and summer bring longer daylight hours and the arrival of the Midnight Sun.  A variety of activities are on offer here throughout the year, to suit each season, including fishing, dog sledding, snowmobiling, Arctic horse riding, hiking, ski-ing, snowshoeing and minibus excursions.

Run by Johan and Sara, owners of the Pine Tree Lodge in Kangos, and managed by Katarina and Sandro, the Aurora Mountain Lodge, a former school, has been completely renovated to provide accommodation in 6 standard rooms and 14 cabins.  Katarina and Sandro both have extensive experience in tourism and are on hand to share their knowledge of the area.  During the winter months Johan and Sara, who also run an activity company, will operate set itineraries including accommodation and excursions at the Aurora Mountain Lodge with excursions being managed by their main guide Viktor Clarmo.

Lannavaara is one of Sweden’s smallest university towns, home to Kristallen, where students receive an education in Gemstone Technology.  Well known for its gemstone grindery and gold panning, the village offers a truly unique stay in a remote location, but yet within a 45 minute drive of the nearest main town of Vittangi with shops and a petrol station.  Visitors to Lannavaara are able to visit Kristallen and its small yet impressive mineral museum, which houses the owners’ personal collection - including a meteorite and the first diamond found in Sweden, as well as purchase hand-made jewellery.
