Holidays to Baska Voda

A former fishing village, there is still a small fleet that goes out each night and despite the arrival of tourism, it feels unspoilt and retains some charm.

The two properties we feature, Aparthotel Milenij and Grand Hotel Slavia are on the seafront right opposite the beaches and a selection of stylish beach bars. There’s a good choice of restaurants both near the sea and in the centre, many in narrow streets or on stone squares. Shops are there too, including clothes, souvenir and food shops including small supermarkets.

As with most places in the Makarska Riviera, there are water sports, boat, kayak and equipment rental and fish picnic excursions to the island.

The adjacent resort of Brela is five kilometres away by road and makes a pleasant walk – you hardly “see the join”. Looking for more of a buzz in the evenings, then Makarska is the place to go, 17 minutes by bus to the south of Baska Voda. Good bus service along this coast.

Mount Biokovo is a Nature Reserve and home to golden eagles, the Balkan chamois or mouflon (like a rather distinct wild mountain go) and the occasional tiny hamlet where local people preserve their traditions. Experienced hikers often scale the marked trails and there are also organised excursions – expect a bumpy ride and some hairpin bends.

• Baska Voda means “clear water” in very old local dialect and the sea here is indeed usually crystal clear
• Skywalk Biokovo opened in 2020 at an elevation of 1228 metres and is 50 mins drive. Not for the fainthearted or those nervous of heights, this is an observatory with an entire glass floor. Fabulous views. Available as an organised excursion.
• It is possible to do a day trip to Dubrovnik, Split, the islands of Mljet and Korcula – on your own using catamarans from nearby Makarska and buses or with an organised excursion and guide.
• Does Santa Claus live here all year? There is a statue of Saint Nicholas on the waterfront and is the first thing seen by anyone arriving by boat. The inspiration for the modern day Santa Claus blesses all who arrive in Baska Voda from the sea, both locals and visitors
