Spain... what not to miss

Here is a selection of some of the many highlights to be found in Spain which we hope will inspire you to travel and experience them for yourselves.

In the sleepy, seaside village of Los Caños de Meca, on the Costa de la Luz, is Cape Trafalgar - the site of Lord Nelson’s famous naval victory over the Spanish fleet in 1805.

Visit one of the many beautiful National parks including Sierra Grazalema, Doñana, Los Alcornocales, Sierra Nevada, Sierra de las Nieves and Alpujarras in Granada Province and Cazorla Natural Park in the province of Jaén.

Granada, Seville, Córdoba, Jaén, Cadiz, Jerez de la Frontera and Ronda are particularly well known and are a melting pot of Roman, Medieval, Moorish and Christian influences.

Andalucía was the birthplace of Flamenco; the pure bred Andalusian horse; the source of Sherry wines and, some say, tapas.

The ‘white villages’ like Arcos de la Frontera and Vejer de la Frontera capture the imagination. Filled with narrow, cobbled streets, historic buildings and whitewashed houses, these strategically placed towns on hilltops, offer stunning panoramas.

This 3km pathway was originally built to maintain the hydroelectric power station at the Gaitanes Gorge. Opened by King Afonso XIII, hence the name, ‘the King’s pathway’ passes along vertical walls and a footbridge over the gorge. Not for the faint-hearted!

Mérida has more Roman remains than anywhere else in Europe outside of Italy and these are designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Visit the Roman Bridge, Roman Theatre, Circus Maximus, Temple of Diana and the National Roman Art Museum.

Many Spanish conquistadors were born in Extremadura and set sail on their adventures to the New World to escape poverty. Hernan Cortes was born in Medellín and Francisco Pizarro and Francisco de Orellana were born in Trujillo.
