Notes from the field – Andalucia’ is the latest in our series of blogs following the Sunvil team as they explore our destinations in search of hidden gems and to handpick our holiday accommodation. Written by Yasmin, a member of our expert Discovery team, this piece details her experiences in Andalucia.

What was your favourite property and why?

My favourite property was La Casa del Califa in Vejer de la Frontera. Located on the picturesque Plaza de España, the hotel is made up of adjacent buildings linked by various staircases and courtyards. Decorated in Al-Andalus style throughout, the hotel retains the ambience of old Vejer, when the Moors ruled.

What was your favourite viewpoint and why?

Climb the narrow cobbled streets and alleys of historic Arcos de La Frontera up to Plaza del Cabildo. Here you will find not only the Parador and the Santa Maria Church but also the Mirador de la Peña Nueva – a viewpoint, at the edge of the cliff on which this square sits, with views for miles over the valley below.

What was your favourite activity and why?

Famous for its sherry, whilst in Jerez de la Frontera a visit to one of the many sherry ‘bodegas’ is a must. Gonzalez Byass, Lustau, Tio Pepe, Harveys and Sandeman, to name but a few, all offer tours to learn how this aperitif is made.

What was your favourite beach and why?

My favourite beach was at Los Caños de Meca in Costa de la Luz - the golden sand beach by Cape Trafalgar. Just off this Cape is where the Battle of Trafalgar was fought on the 21st October 1805 and today where many flock to view the Cape Trafalgar lighthouse, participate in water sports or simply watch the sun go down.

Where you ate your best meal and what did you have?

I ate my best meal at the Valvatida Restaurant in Vejer de la Frontera. This is a small and charming restaurant serving rural cuisine using locally sourced ingredients. The restaurant itself is cosy and full of character with a relaxed homely feel. Starter was a salad with mushrooms and finely sliced cheese as well as a Tapa of croquettes. For the main course ‘La Felicidad’ which translates as ‘The Happiness’ – a Vejerian dish of potatoes cooked with rosemary, two fried eggs and beef sausages from La Janda. Keeping with the local theme, a bottle of Sonrisa – a smooth red wine from Vejer de la Frontera was the choice of beverage and finally a slice of chocolate cake. Average price 25 euros per person.

The highlight of your trip.

Visiting some of the various ‘pueblos blancos’ (white towns) scattered throughout Andalucia. Each of these historic towns varies in size, some better known than others, but all have their own unique beauty.

General feel of the area.

The provinces of Malaga and Cadiz are filled with unspoiled countryside, historic towns and main cities. Whilst the province of Malaga offers a dramatic mountainous backdrop, as you drive in to the province of Cadiz the mountains give way to hills. This is an area filled with history, delicious gastronomy, a relaxed pace of life and some of the best beaches in Europe.
