The Sunvil team have been out and about travelling to our featured destinations and meeting with local partners. Some of the team have ventured to new destinations independently, staying at various accommodation types, trying local delicacies, testing out excursions, and meeting with hoteliers and representatives to discover hidden gems. Below you can read the travel highlights of Nicole, Alison, Kellie, Jordan, Noel and Chris.
Nicole has been winter fishing, snowmobiling, and enjoying the wilderness on a reindeer safari in Finland. However, her highlight has been getting to know new people over dinner. Breaking bread and just enjoying being in the company of strangers… who later became friends. Travel for Nicole is about stepping out of your comfort zone and reconnecting - not only with people - but with life. It is a sense of being at one with your surroundings and embracing slow travel, living in the moment, and seizing the day!
Alison visited the countries of Finland and Norway. When asked about her highlight she commented on the beautiful sound of nature: the dogs barking in excitement on a husky sledding trip; the crunch of snow underfoot; the silence when the snowmobile engines switched off; the whistle of the wind across the wilderness; and the sound of nothing as the Northern Lights danced in the skies.
Kellie’s travel highlight was returning to her home on Samos. Apprehensive about the journey and what to expect in terms of mask wearing and rules, she was pleasantly surprised. Around Heathrow there is plenty of signage and the staff were available and ready to help Kellie if she needed it; understanding that some people may experience anxiety flying post restrictions. This was evident when going through security, as many people had forgotten what is allowed in your hand luggage and what isn’t. Not Kellie though – she was more than prepared! Kellie’s journey was stress free and she is now happy to be back on Samos. She says, “it's great to see people around the island starting to prepare their tavernas, hotels and apartments ready for the summer season”.
Jordan spent time in Sweden and Finland enjoying what he described as a “once in a lifetime experience”. His favourite activity was without a doubt seeing the aurora borealis not once, but twice! Jordan loved the thrill of travelling and exploring outside of Greece, a country he is very familiar with. Like Nicole, getting to know the locals was his highlight. The Scandinavian and Finnish people Jordan met were very warm and welcoming, and he quickly realised that they love their culture and are extremely proud of what they do – and so they should be! This passion comes across in the service and tourism products they provide. A passion that has never faded.
Noel has enjoyed re-discovering his innate desire to explore after visiting Subbetica, the latest edition to our Spanish programme. He describes Subbetica as “a magical region, a real Sunvil discovery, and an area - like the Alentejo in Portugal - that people tend just to drive through on their way to somewhere else, without realising what they are missing”. Finding the real country and sharing this with others is something Noel is passionate about. And although English was not widely spoken in Subbetica, he enjoyed spending time in nature, walking and cycling, admiring ancient castles and beautiful villages, and trying great food, wine and olive oil.
Chris spoke about the joy of finding new and exciting properties on one of his favourite islands in Greece, Corfu. He describes the Angsana Resort and Spa as “a little slice of heaven” and enjoyed winding down in the luxury spa and wellbeing centre. After a tumultuous couple of years, it has been the perfect place for Chris to regroup, gather his thoughts and revitalise his energy ahead of the summer season. He says, “the joy of getting away and clearing the mind is priceless”.
