Explore Stockholm and the islands of Grinda and Sandon this summer

Surrounding the Swedish capital is an extensive archipelago of islands, islets and skerries. It is a natural paradise that has to be seen to be believed and a summer playground for sailors, swimmers and outdoor enthusiasts. Even an hour here, surrounded by the sparkling waters and unspoiled scenery, is guaranteed to leave you feeling refreshed and re-energised. This year head north for your summer holiday and enjoy long day light hours, traditional festivities, mouth-watering local produce (seafood in particular) and the right to roam as you please. Our 7-night itinerary is a gentle introduction to Stockholm’s little known gem and combines two of her islands – Sandon and Grinda with the capital herself.

7 Nights

From £1,122 per person

Return flights. Transfers on arrival and on departure. 2 nights at Sandhamn Seglarhotell on Sandon (Bed & Breakfast). 2 nights at Grinda Wardshus on Grinda (Bed & Breakfast). 3 nights at the Elite Eden Park Hotel in Stockholm (Bed & Breakfast). 48 hour Stockholm Card

Day
1

On arrival at Stockholm Arlanda airport, you will be transferred to the Elite Eden Park Hotel in the centre of the city.

Within a short walk of the hotel is the Ostermalm Saluhall, a favourite of the Sunvil team; the shopping streets of Ostermalm and Norrmalm and the waterfront promenade.

Day
2

Free time in Stockholm. Opportunity to explore the city and her attractions at your leisure. There is much to experience in the city but, for us, her charm lies in her natural surroundings and the activities that these offer. Why not get your bearings by joining a guided cycle tour, by taking a 50-minute canal boat tour or, for a unique experience there is, the ‘roof-top tour’.

Of the man-made attractions we are enamoured with Gamla Stan, the City Hall, Djurgarden, the Vasa Museum, the Museum of Modern Art and the viewpoints from the Kaknastornet or Katarinavagen.

Day
3

After breakfast, self transfer to Strandvagen where your boat to the island of Sandon will depart. Sandon, in the outer archipelago, is reached within 2 hours - 3 ½ hours (depending on the boat booked). Take a seat on the deck and wave goodbye to the hustle of city life. The Sandhamn Seglarhotell is located next to the harbour in the village of Sandhamn, the primary settlement on the island and a haven for sailors. The hotel offers great views over the harbour and archipelago and has an a la carte restaurant, relax area and swimming pool.

Day
4

Day at leisure on Sandon. The island is 2.5km long and, as well as for its summer sailing fraternity, it is famed for its superb sandy beaches and pretty wooden houses and narrow alleyways. A number of activities can be booked locally including fishing and kayaking. During the summer months, Sandon is very lively and many regattas start and finish on the island.

Day
5

After breakfast, you will continue your tour of Stockholm’s archipelago by taking the boat to the inner archipelago and the island of Grinda. Again, a popular summer island, Grinda has three small harbours and a lush, unspoiled interior. There are plenty of small coves and secluded spots for swimming. On arrival on Grinda, you will self-transfer to the Grinda Wardshus (a few minutes’ walk).

Day
6

Free time on Grinda. Take a stroll around the island and explore the fields, viewpoints and beaches. Activities including kayaking can be arranged locally by the hotel.

Day
7

After breakfast, transfer by boat to Stockholm city centre. On arrival self-transfer to the Elite Eden Park Hotel for your final night in Sweden.

Day
8

After breakfast, you will be transferred to Stockholm Arlanda Airport for your return flight to the UK.
