Activity and Aurora experiences in Bjorkliden

Amongst towering mountains, between the Abisko National Park and the Norwegian border, is Bjorkliden Mountain Resort; a ski resort, a winter sports centre and the ideal destination for a sighting of the Northern Lights. For the Aurora hunter, Bjorkliden is a dream destination. High on the mountainside, the only artificial lights are those created by the resort itself. It is possible to see for miles around from the snow-covered slopes and without any natural obstructions the dark starlit sky stretches as far as the eye can see – perfect for sightings. The Sunvil team were lucky enough to see the Northern Lights from our bedroom at Bjorkliden. We hope that the Lady Aurora is kind to our guests too.

3 Nights

From £1,090 per person based on 2 sharing

Return flights to Kiruna (via Stockholm Arlanda). Shared transfers on arrival and on departure. 3-nights at Björkliden Mountain Resort, Björkliden (HB). All excursions as detailed. Single room supplement on request.

On arrival at Kiruna airport, you will be transferred to Björkliden Mountain Resort in Björkliden.

Aurora Photo Tour:

This evening, join an Aurora photo tour led by a professional photographer. The tour will explore the Abisko National Park in search of the magical Northern Lights and includes the use of a camera, tripod, a winter overall and backpack. Benefiting from a microclimate of low precipitation and clear night skies, and away from light pollution, the Abisko National Park offers one of the best situations for a sighting of the Northern Lights. Listen carefully and you may even hear the lights - green, white, blue, red - dancing on the wind.

Snowmobile excursion and optional visit to the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko (supplement payable):

The landscape surrounding Bjorkliden Mountain Resort is nothing short of spectacular especially when the snow glistens under the winter sunlight. At the base of the resort is the frozen Lake Torneträsk and to the east the natural landmark ‘Lapporten’ (a gap in the mountain range). Departing Bjorkliden Mountain Resort your snowmobile tour will allow you to explore this fascinating destination and access otherwise inaccessible locations. Evening at leisure at Bjorkliden Mountain Resort.  Alternatively, we can arrange a visit to the Aurora Sky Station in Abisko. This mountainside café/station is widely recognised as offering one of the finest platforms for sightings of the mystical Aurora Borealis (supplement payable).

Husky dog sled excursion:

Day at leisure in Bjorkliden. Opportunity to pre-book a snowshoe tour, a caving tour or to visit the ICEHOTEL or the Norwegian fjord-side town of Narvik (excursion schedule permitting).  This evening, we have included a husky dog sled excursion. With 12 eager huskies pulling your sled, you will climb the mountainside to an uninterrupted viewpoint where, if conditions permit, you will observe one of nature’s most wondrous sights – the Aurora Borealis.

After breakfast, transfer to Kiruna airport for the return flight to the UK

Of course, we cannot guarantee a sighting with a natural phenomenon such as the Aurora Borealis but we have a few tips to help you increase your changes of a sighting.

  1. Leave the artifical lights of the city behind.
  2. Choose excursions which offer the opportunity to 'chase' or 'search' for the Northern Lights. These tend to have a higher success rating.
  3. Travel at the time of the new moon when the sky is at its darkest.
  4. Stay as long as you can. Four nights or longer is ideal.

But, above all we would recommend that you book a tour that includes an activity, or a visit to a region of spectacular natural beauty, so that you have a wonderful evening regardless of a sighting.
