Thirty years ago Yngve Bergqvist had a dream; a dream that saw him resign from his mining career and spearhead the creation of a hotel made wholly of ice and snow in the heart of Swedish Lapland. His aim was to extend the tourism season in Jukkasjarvi and to provide local employment opportunities. His desire was educate the world about the delights of the region and build a beacon of light for the dark winter months. You could say that it was Responsible Tourism in its purest form, ahead of its time, involving the community in his vision and using nature's bounty as building blocks - a circle of life. The result was the ICEHOTEL.
Today the ICEHOTEL is much more than the small igloo hotel built in 1989. It is now the only ICEHOTEL to offer guests the chance to stay in an ice room throughout the year. It is the largest of its kind, always evolving and innovating.
We have offered holidays to the ICEHOTEL since the early days of our Scandinavian programme (2008) and each year we wait with baited breath for the release of the plans for the forthcoming winter. We have not been disappointed yet. In 2018 we saw 'the Spruce Woods', in 2015 the 'Elephant in the room', and who could forget the Polar Bear and the Tube Line? This year, artists from the Netherlands, Sweden, Canada, Chile, Germany, the USA, South Korea, the UK, South Africa and beyond have been selected from the 126 unique concepts entered. There is 'a night at the theatre', a room based on a West End London Theatre and White Santorini, a frozen landscape inspired by the beauty of the Greek island.
