Luleå Winter Activities

From January to late March, the wilderness landscape surrounding Luleå is covered in a dusting of snow and the sea freezes, creating a dream location for winter experiences and excursions.

Snowmobile tours:

Snowmobile pack ice tour: A FAVOURITE OF THE SUNVIL TEAM.

The tour includes the opportunity to try ice fishing.

The coastal region of Swedish Lapland is a sight to behold during the winter months. As the snow and crisp winter temperatures arrive, the Bothnian Bay begins to freeze and the once blue sea becomes a blanket of white.

On this 4-hour snowmobile tour, you will be led through forests and across the frozen sea to the island of Bradoskar, one of the 3306 islands in the archipelago, and its idyllic 17th century fishing village. You will also visit the endless fields of pack ice and snow (piles of snow formed as the sea meets the ice) which in some years can reach 10m in height.

A hot drink, outdoor lunch and the opportunity to try ice-fishing are included.

  • Duration: 5 1⁄2 hours
  • Available: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays at 1000hrs (22 Dec 14 - 31 Mar 15) 
  • Price: £300 per person* / Price: £150 per child (under 13yrs)  
  • The supplement to drive your own snowmobile is £132

  • Departure from Lulea.
  • The transfer to/from the excursion, by minibus, takes approximately 45 minutes each way.

  • Approximately 2 1⁄2 hours are spent on board the snowmobiles.
  • One guide per 10 participants or per 6 snowmobiles if 1 passenger on board.
  • Snowmobile suit, boots, socks, warm gloves, balaclava and helmet are provided  
  • An excess of 10,000SEK is payable in the event of an accident/damage to the snowmobile.
  • To drive a snowmobile, participants must hold a valid driving licence and be aged 18yrs or older.

Dog sled tours:

After meeting your team of huskies at the kennels at Svedjekojan, you will depart for a tour of the surrounding landscape. Traverse forests and frozen lakes and watch the picturesque white landscape glide past from the seat of your sled.

  • Duration: 3 hours 30 minutes
  • Available: Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 1230hrs (Early January to Early April – start/end date determined by weather conditions) 
  • Price: £260 per person / £136 per child (under 10yrs)
  • If you would like to try and drive your own sled, a price of £269 per person would apply. In this instance you would share your sled with one other passenger and each have a turn to mush.

  • The transfer to/from the excursion, by minibus, takes approximately 35 minutes each way. 
  • Each sled carries a maximum of 4 passengers. Please note that you may be required to share a sled with other guests. 
  • Each sled is pulled by 4 or more dogs. 
  • Approximately 2 hours are spent on the sled. 
  • Winter clothing (overall, gloves, boots and balaclava) included. 
  • A warm drink is included.

Minibus tours:

Guided tour of Gammelstad:

This 1-hour guided tour visits the church town of Gammelstad, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located on the outskirts of Luleå. Gammelstad is the largest and best preserved example of a church town in Sweden and is steeped in history. Take a stroll between the red wooden houses with your guide and visit the Medieval church which dominates the landscape and is at the centre of the community.

  •  Duration: 1 hour 40 minutes
  • Available: Daily all year  
  • Price: £76 per person / £38 per child (under 13yrs)

  • Departure from Lulea.
  • The transfer to/from Gammelstad, by minibus, takes approximately 20 minutes each way.  
  • Winter clothing is not provided. 
  • Minimum 2 participants. Maximum 8 participants.

Snowshoe excursion:

Evening snowshoe tour:

Walking through the Brändö forests on snowshoes your experienced guide will tell you about your surroundings and life in the Luleå wilderness. If the conditions permit, there is also a chance to see the dance of the Northern Lights overhead. Together with the guide, you will build your campfire and prepare the outdoor evening meal and refreshments.

  •  Duration: 4 hours
  • Available: Monday, Wednesday and Thursday at 1730hrs (Early January to Late March – start/end date determined by weather conditions) 
  • Price: £205 per person / £103 per child (under 13yrs)

  • Evening meal and hot beverages are provided. Please advise any dietary requirements at the time of booking. 
  • Snow shoes, thermal suit, boots, hat, socks and gloves provided.

Ice breaker cruise:

The ice breaker boat has been a lifeline for coastal communities for over a century. On this excursion you will be able to experience the might of the vessel against the ice-covered sea and river. Listen to the sound of ice blocks being crushed against the hull of the boat ‘Arctic Explorer’ and get a glimpse of what little man can do in the hands of nature.

The tour includes about 1 hour of ice-breaking and there is also the opportunity to take a swim in the waters dressed in a survival suit.

  • Duration: 4 hours
  • Available: Saturdays at 0950hrs (From 21 February to Early April)
  • Price: £163 per person / £82 per child (under 14yrs)

  • Hot beverages and snacks are available for purchase on board the boat
  • Winter clothing not included. It is possible to hire winter clothing for 250SEK per person
  • Depending on the ice conditions this excursion may cross the frozen sea or travel the frozen River Piteå.

Ice music concert:

Ice Music is a celebration of the winter spirit of Swedish Lapland – a new art form where the musicians play on instruments made of ice – ICEstruments. Sounds unbelievable, but it is happening in Luleå.

Step into the concert hall a gigantic cosmic igloo where the orchestra glows and pulsates in all the colours of the rainbow. Be swept away by the crisp, rich and energetic sound – the voice of ice. We invite you to experience the magic of Ice Music with us in Luleå, Swedish Lapland – Sweden’s northernmost destination.

  • Duration: 50 minutes
  • Available: Fridays and Saturdays (16 January 2015 to beginning of April 2015)

Hovercraft pack ice tour: A FAVOURITE OF THE SUNVIL TEAM.

A unique and magical way of exploring Lulea’s frozen archipelago on board a hovercraft. No where else in Swedish Lapland is this experience available!
 
Your 2 ½ hour tour will include a journey across the ice-covered Bothnian Bay with the goal to reach the pack ice fields of the outer archipelago (weather conditions permitting). There is free time to walk on the ice and if you are lucky there is the chance to spot a seal or sea eagles.

  • Duration: 3 ½ hours
  • Available: Tuesday, Thursdays and Sundays at 1000hrs (January - Early April)
  • Price: £318 per person / Price: £159 per child (under 13yrs)
