Kalamata Holidays

Kalamata holidays

With mountains on three sides, Kalamata is at the head of the Gulf of Messini. To one side the imposing bulk of Mount Taygetos gives a dramatic foretaste of the Mani; to the other the rolling hills of the Messinian peninsula disappear into the heat haze.

After the small traditional villages of the south, Kalamata comes as a great contrast. It is a busy and commercial hub, with some good shopping and excellent restaurants. Kalamata is world famous for its olives and olive oil, and also boasts the freshest fruit and vegetables.

Holidays In Kalamata

The sand-shingle beach is very long (over 2 kms) and the swimming is excellent. The sea here consistently wins a Blue Flag for its cleanliness. Backing it for much of its length is the lively seafront ‘paralia’, lined with cafes, tavernas and a beach club or two. A very good bus service shuttles the length of it throughout the day and well into the night.

The old town in the north of the city has a castle, churches and several museums to visit.

Kalamata is the best location from which to explore the entire region. There is a reasonable bus service but, to make the most of it a car is recommended.
