Tromso Tromso

Favourite accommodation and why?

My favourite hotel was the Clarion Collection Aurora, it is located in front of the harbour and offers amazing panoramic views. They have an outdoor Jacuzzi which is perfect to relax after a long day of exploring and activities while looking at the views of the Fjords, harbour and the Arctic Cathedral, if your lucky you may even get to see the Northern lights. This hotel is centrally located and within walking distance to Tromso’s museums, restaurants and activities meeting points. They have a restaurant offering local cuisine and lots of choice which is also worth a visit.

Favourite viewpoint and why?

On my first night in Tromso I decided to go on the cable car, I wasn’t expecting much but as I had no other plans I thought I would give it a go. In just 4 minutes we were at the top of the mountain and the views were breathtaking. From this viewpoint you can see the whole of Tromso and its surrounding islands. With in minutes of arriving the Northern lights were dancing in the dark clear sky, it was one of the most beautiful things I have ever witnessed. I would recommend to anyone chasing the Aurora Borealis to add this to their itinerary.

Favourite activity and why?

I really enjoyed the dog sledding tour. You get picked up from Tromso city centre before going on a 30 minute coach journey to the island of Kvaloya, where the kennels are based. On arrival you are provided with overalls, boots, gloves and a hat to keep you warm, once you are ready to go you get to spend some time meeting the excited and cheerful Alaskan huskies. We were then shown by the experience guides on how to mush your own team of dogs.

This tour is 90 minutes long and takes you between trees and up hills through Kvaloya. You also get the chance to sit on the sled while taking in the beautiful scenery around you. At the end of the sledding we gathered around a fire and were served cake and a hot drink while listening to exciting stories about the dogs... Perfect way to end an amazing experience.

Where you had your best meal, what you had and approximate cost?

My best meal was during a northern lights dinner cruise. In the catamaran MB Havcruise whilst you are out at sea in search of the Northern lights,  you are offered a traditional Norwegian home cooked meal made of fresh cod, potatoes, vegetables and bacon & onion sauce.

I paid approximately £145.00, which included the dinner and also the 3 hour excursion looking for the Aurora Borealis.

Highlight of the trip?

I was very lucky to see the Northern lights 3 nights in a row from different locations, on top of a mountain, during a boat cruise and near a base camp in the middle of nowhere away from the city lights. To me this was a once in a life time experience. Tromso has a lot more to offer, so it was great fun doing the day trip activities such as dog sledding and snowmobiling while seeing the beautiful surrounding. I also enjoyed visiting the Polar Museum and learning about Northern Norway’s history.

General feel of the area?

Tromso is a lively city surrounded by the Lyngen Alps and an archipelago. The locals are friendly and accommodating, it makes the perfect weekend break all year round with something to offer for everyone especially adventure lovers. There is enough to do and explore to keep you busy.  Seeing the sunset and sunrise over the fjords makes this city extra special.

With its lush valleys, vine-clad hillsides, historical towns and a National Park, it is easy to understand what Cristiana is so passionate about northern Portugal, her ancestral home. Fluent in Portuguese and conversant in Spanish, she has been able to scratch under the surface of these countries on her travels and loves nothing more than sharing her findings with our guests. Recently Cristiana has returned from Swedish Lapland, a destination which was on her own bucket list and which did not fail to impress.
