The historical centre:

The historical centre of Oslo, Norway is compact and best explored on foot. Start your tour at the Royal Palace and then stroll along Karl Johans Gate towards the shopping district, central station and Opera House. On your way you will pass the National Theatre and the Parliament.

The Norwegian constitution was signed on the 17th May 1814 and each year the National Day is celebrated with a public holiday. In the capital, the Royal Family presides over the street procession from the Royal Palace.

Vigeland sculpture park

Adorned with 212 bronze, iron and granite sculptures, including the renowned and much photographed ‘angry child’, the park commemorates the work of Gustav Vigeland and is one of the most visited attractions in Oslo.

Mathallen food market

Mathallen food market, 1km from the centre of Oslo, is the place to go to find specialty shops, cafes and independent places to eat and drink. Popular with local residents the market predominantly sells high-quality Norwegian goods from smallscale producers.

Oslofjord

Take a boat trip out of the city and explore the 100km Oslofjord, a relaxing summer destination loved by local residents and visitors alike. Here you will find an archipelago with many beaches, hiking trails and sites of cultural heritage. Sightseeing tours and regular boat connections are available.

Ekeberg sculpture park

In 2013, a new sculpture park was opened on the Ekeberg Hills in the city of Oslo. The Ekebergparken has 31 individually commission sculptures - including the Walking Woman - and enjoys spectacular views over the capital to the Oslofjord.

Bygdøy peninsula

Vibrant Oslo has a museum for every interest. Why not take a boat from Rådhusbrygge to the Bygdøy peninsula to visit the Viking Ship Museum, Norwegian Museum of Cultural History, the Polar Ship Museum, the Kon-Tiki Museum and the Norwegian Maritime Museum?

Astrup Fearnley Museum

This privately owned museum has established itself as an important institution for presentation of contemporary art since its inauguration in 1993. The building in which the museum is housed is a piece of modern art in itself.

Norway in a nutshell tour

The Bergen railway - linking the capital to the gateway of the fjords - is one of the highest mainline railways in Europe and affords some truly remarkable views. A journey on the railway can be arranged as a day excursion or as a means of transportation to Bergen.

Aker Brygge

The waterfront district of Aker Brygge is teeming with activity 24-hours as day - especially in the height of summer. There is an abundance of terraced restaurants and bars as well as a number of outdoor art installations. Visit in the evening to be invigorated by the lively ambience.

Akershus fortress

Strategically located on the eastern side of Oslo harbourfront, the 13th century Akershus fortress has withstood a number of sieges throughout the ages. Nowadays you can watch the changing of the guards, visit the dungeons and state rooms and, in the summer, take-in a concert.

Walking and cycling in the capital

Leave the trodden tourist trails of the city centre behind you, and take a stroll or cycle along the Akerselva river to to the districts of Tjuvholmen and Vulkan.
