Founded by a locally born tourism graduate and a surfer who arrived in Vejer in 1988, the Califa, located on the popular Plaza de España, Vejer’s largest flat open space, is made up of 10 houses that have been moulded together to create a wonderful hotel of character which encompasses 7 cisterns (two still in use), 7 entrances on three different street levels, 12 stairways, 78 windows, 51 doors, 4 courtyards and a cave.

The principal house dates from the late 15th century and was a grain store.  However one of the water cisterns is believed to be from the 10th century.

The hotel is managed by a small team who have been together for 20 years and is probably the best known hotel in Vejer, with a restaurant ‘El Jardin del Califa’, serving Moroccan, Lebanese and Middle Eastern dishes which are Michelin Guide recommended. The restaurant is part of a grade one listed building.

Employing predominantly local staff, the Califa uses solar power and 50% of the vegetables used in the restaurant are organic, as is the beef, chicken, sugar and flour.
