The Troodos Mountains is Cyprus' largest mountain range and also home to the country's highest peak, Mt Olympus. The flora of the Geopark is the richest in Cyprus and, for this reason, the Troodos mountain range is considered one of the most important mountain habitats for plants in the whole of Europe. The fauna of Troodos reflects the rich flora and the wide spectrum of habitats it creates for many insects, birds and animals, many of which are endemic to the region.
The Alentejo and Vicentina coastline in the southwest of Portugal is the best preserved coastal area in southern Europe.
Train travel is one of the easiest and most economical ways of travelling within Italy & Sicily, especially between the major cities and towns. Cities such as Venice, Florence, Rome, Catania and Syracuse are all connected by the state-run system operated by the Ferrovie Dello Stato (FS). Travel between Venice and Rome by Eurostar train will take approximately 4 1/2 hours compared to a drive of 5-6 hours (excluding stops and traffic delays).
For foodies, the traditional Alentejo fare offers much to savour in the region’s many excellent restaurants. Try the freshest of fish from the nearby coast, the many cheeses and locally-reared lamb and beef and the world famous ham from black pigs fed on acorns from the cork trees. The area is known as the bread basket of Portugal and boasts vast fields of wheat and other grains.
