Travel post lockdown, at least initially, requires an acceptance that life has changed. From travelling to the airport to arrival in resort, you will notice that steps have been adopted to safeguard your wellbeing and that of the wider travelling community. You also need to accept that you cannot control everything and focus on those aspects of your journey that you can manage and to ultimately enjoy your holiday.

Many travellers understandbly have concerns when preparing to travel for their long overdue holiday. Travelling abroad now is a personal choice and it's okay to be cautious. Here we provide a few tips and advice to help ease any worries about your travel post-lockdown.

Before you travel

Before you travel

We have compiled the latest information about the protocols, preventative measures and changes in place in all our holiday destinations in response to the Coronavirus (Covid-19) pandemic.

  • Get the latest advice from the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. It is important to do some research before you travel to be aware of the latest travel advice for the region. Visit https://www.gov.uk/foreign-travel-advice/cyprus. You can also sign up for email alerts and follow @fcdotraveladvice on Twitter and @fcdotravel for alerts whilst you are away.
  • Travel insurance remains as important as ever, if not more so. Please ensure that your policy covers you for cancellation pre-departure for Coronavirus (Covid-19) related events and also provides assistance overseas should the need arise. You can find a list of companies covering such cover on our Covid-19 information hub.
  • Make a checklist of the items that you need in order to enjoy yourself while being mindful of the pandemic. Be sure to include a supply of face masks, hand sanitizer and disinfectant wipes. Packing the right toiletries are important because these play a huge role in your health and hygiene. Ensure that liquids, gels, and creams are all travel-friendly sizes.
  • Beach towels are currently not supplied by some resorts and therefore should form part of your luggage, if required.
  • Only take minimal hand luggage and ideally at a size that will fit under the seat. This will speed up the boarding/disembarking process and the time spent at security.
  • Take some snacks and a refillable water bottle for your journey. With limited shops and eateries open at the airport we recommend that you travel with enough provisions for your trip.
  • Ensure you have all the relevant documentation in relation to your testing printed and handy ready when you get to the airport check in desk. Printed documentation saves time rather than searching for various details on your phone. Also, should you lose your phone or your batteries die, you have paperwork as a back-up.

At the airport

At the airport

  • No matter your departure airport, you can rest assured that they are working alongside the UK government, health professionals and airlines to ensure the wellbeing of all those who cross the threshold.
  • Whilst waiting for your flight, the airport experience is going to feel a little different. We would also advise you arrive no more than 2 hours prior to departure.
  • Facemasks will be worn by all passenger facing staff, with some wearing PPE. Passengers are asked to wear face masks inside the terminal building.
  • Protective screens will be in place in many areas of the terminal including at check-in and at the boarding gates.
  • Social distancing will be in place throughout the terminal building. This will be most notable in the seating areas and at the departure gates.
  • Hand sanitisers will be available throughout the terminal building. It is recommended that you sanitise regularly.
  • If possible, check in your bag and only take a small amount of personal items on board the aircraft.

Onboard your flight

Onboard your flight

  • Boarding may happen in reverse, starting with the back of the plane and working forwards. This helps to reduce unnecessary passenger contact.
  • Aircraft personnel will be wearing facemasks. Passengers are required to wear face masks except when eating and drinking.
  • Although airlines are operating enhanced cleaning regimes, we advise you take some sanitising wipes on board your flight to sanitise your personal area, for your own peace of mind.

On arrival

On arrival

  • Your destination has its own protocols in place for managing new arrivals and flights are being staggered to reduce waiting times and congestion within the terminal buildings.
  • As with the UK, facemasks are mandatory for all passengers and airport personnel.
  • Your journey through the airport may take longer than normal as checks are undertaken.
  • On collection of your luggage move swiftly through the arrivals area where you will be met by a Sunvil or a local destination representative who will be on hand to answer any questions you have.
