Walking trail on Corfu Walking trail on Corfu

Walking on the Greek Island of Corfu means walking in a mosaic of verdant green and azure blue. As you walk on almost forgotten trails between sleepy mountain villages you will discover lush green mountainous landscapes where the beguiling blue of the sea is very rarely out of sight.

Kalami, situated on the Northeast coast of Corfu, just 30 km from Corfu Town has the ideal setting for people who enjoy walking and rambling. It is considered to be one of the most tranquil beauty spots on the island. It is a horseshoe-shaped bay, with a rare beauty of the Greek uniqueness of nature. The amphitheatric greenery accompanied with the Ionian Sea and the hillside villages around Kalami are a perfect combination for an idyllic and relaxing environment.

In May, June, September or October, the weather is refreshing with a mild climate and the ideal time for rambling. Also Kalami beach proudly flies the blue flag, the European standards symbol awarded to beaches that are clean and well organised. It is a pebbly beach and the water is crystal clear and absolutely perfect to take a dip during or after your walk.

For any walk, as well as wearing suitable footwear, we advise you to take the following items -

  • Water
  • Fruit
  • Mobile phone
  • Sun cream
  • Hat
  • Camera
  • Money
  • Insect repellent
  • Swimwear and towel

Here are a selection of self-guided walks in and around Kalami ranging from 'short and easy', perfect for the novice rambler to 'long and difficult' for the more energetic.

Kalami to Agni - 15 mins (short walk)

Walk through Kalami and head towards the White House (keep the sea on your left). You will see a sign “Agni – 0.7km.” , climb around the bend then follow another " Agni" sign down to the left. This comes out on a small beach called Yaliskari. Immediately turn back off the beach up a steep track. A few yards on the left take a narrow path alongside a mesh fence all the way to Agni.

Kalami to Kouloura – 20 mins (short walk)

Walk along the main road leaving Kalami (keep the sea on your right). Follow this road until you get to a junction, do not turn left, continue straight down the hill and turn right and you are in the little harbour of Kouloura.
Kouloura is one of the most photographed beauty spots on the island. Sit and relax, have lunch and watch all the fishing boats coming in and going out of the harbour.

Kalami to Agios Stephanos – 1hr 15mins (long walk)

Follow the walk to Kouloura, do not turn right down to the harbour, go straight ahead where you will find a small pebble beach. You will see a large old building at the end of the beach, just after this, you will then begin to climb the headland. You will walk along the beautiful hillside and arrive at a very tiny pebble beach. Have a swim-stop here, then, rejoin your path up the hillside. You will pass another beach further along, this is Kerasia, this beach, has barely been discovered by tourists, so it is not very busy.

There is one taverna at the end of this beach. Next to the taverna is a road that will then take you to Agios Stefanos. There is another way taking you cross-country but we do not recommend it, as it can be highly dangerous in places. Agios Stefanos is a picturesque bay where fishing boats and small yacht flotillas frequent in the circular harbour. This area is surrounded by, red-roofed and whitewashed houses, which makes the perfect photograph.
Unless you want to walk back, we do suggest you ask for a taxi in one of the tavernas.

Kalami to Vingla, Porta, Kendroma & Gimari – 2hr 30mins (long & difficult walk)

Leave Kalami along the main road (keep the sea on your right). Follow the road until you get to Kouloura junction. Turn left and walk up the hill. At the top of the hill, turn right. Walk along the main road for approximately 10mins and you will find a beautiful viewpoint, which looks out across Albania and looks down to Kouloura. Continue walking along the main road for approximately 15mins, you will see a sign on the left for Vingla, turn left here.
Walk through Vingla and head to Porta, approximately 45mins. Go through Porta to the center of the village, there is a left turn down a concrete road, signposted “Kendroma & old village school.” Walk down to Kendroma, turn left and join the main road. Keep walking for approximately 15mins. Going through Gimari, you will see a sign “way to the beach”, this is just before a pink coloured and stone-clad house on the right. Head down this footpath for approximately 10mins and you will finish in the center of Kalami village.

Good accommodation is always at a premium in Kalami, one of the prettiest hamlets along Corfu’s favoured northeast coast, so we are delighted to offer the Kalami Bay Apartments which enjoy an enviable position and views. They are quietly located on the hillside above Kalami, no more than a five minute walk (300m) down to the beach and village.

Having been at university and unsure as to what to do following some temporary jobs, Dudley joined the family firm as a brochure packer in 1979. In those days distribution was from the office premises and Sunvil was just beginning to grow again, following the Turkish invasion of Cyprus, the company’s major destination, in 1974. He was then made responsible for travel agency sales. In due course he took over the running and brochure writing for the Sunvil Greece programme and the contracting of accommodation. He is now a director of the company and is the most knowledgeable and experienced member of the Greek team. He mixes work in administering the programme with taking reservations and he particularly enjoys tackling complicated and well nigh impossible itineraries.
