Stretching over nearly a third of Portugal, the rolling fields of the Alentejo offer some of the country’s most stunning vistas and extraordinary sights. Whilst it is one of Portugal’s lesser known regions, the Alentejo is the perfect destination for a whole host of holidays; relaxing beach holidays, rural retreats, gastronomic breaks, wine tours and active holidays.

Like the Algarve almost 40 years, the Alentejo is still a relatively untouched part of Portugal. Not known to the travelling masses, it boasts little fishing villages along its coast and fields of wheat and sunflowers in its interior. There are many highlights to the region, chief amongst them being a visit the royal city of Evora – the capital of the Alto Alentejo, renowned as a city of culture – and a visit to the 22,000 hectares of vineyards in the south (a utopia for wine lovers and those who simply enjoy a good glass or two), but for those who look a little deeper there is so much more to discover.
Whether you are looking for wine or a spa, culture or history, unknown beaches or a castle to stay in, the Alentejo has everything you are looking for, and much more besides. Really, what reason have you got for not going to the Alentejo in 2014?
