Greener Holidays are good for everyone

The 1st of July sees the start of the 2015, Travel Foundation Make Holidays Greener month, an initiative close to Sunvil’s heart and one which we have passionately supported since its inauguration.

This year however, given the recent events in Greece, Tunisia and France to name but a few, we feel that the campaign is of even greater importance as travel is a great unifier and has the power to bring people together through a greater understanding of different cultures and simple human contact.

The idea behind Make Holidays Greener is that we should all challenge ourselves to make one change, during our time away, that will benefit the local people and their environment. For example you could:

Adopt a ‘buy local’ philosophy for food, souvenirs and/or excursions. This would mean that the money spent stays in the local community.

Whitebait with potato salad

Reduce waste by managing what you pack and, if recycling facilities are not available locally, bringing this waste back to the UK to be processed. This protects the local environment and preserves it for future guests.
Spend time talking to the local people, ask questions about their life and learn a few words in their language.
Participate in one of the local initiatives organised by our team of representatives in Greece e.g. a beach clean.

Small steps but, if everyone made a change, just think how great the benefits could be.

The Greek economy and its people rely on tourism and need foreign visitors now more than ever. As they always have done, the Greeks are wonderful hosts and will welcome their visitors with open arms and big hearts and will do their utmost to ensure that visitors to their village or island have an excellent and memorable holiday.

So please consider a holiday to Greece this year – you will not be disappointed! As a bonus your spending money will go very long way as the Pound is at its highest value for many a year, making what were already good value local prices a real bargain – and you’ll be doing your bit to help this wonderfully warm-hearted nation through their current crisis.
