Mani isn't just about dramatic coastlines and historic tower houses. It's also a place where tradition bursts into life with unique festivals throughout the year. Whether you crave smooth jazz, literary discussions, or dance, Mani has something to ignite your cultural spark.
Kardamili Jazz Festival: Kardamili hosts a well respected jazz festival every year for one week starting the first Saturday in May. Since its inaugural year (2014) the festival has grown and in 2018 featured bands from 8 countries who played some 50 concerts over the week in Kardamili's cafes, bars, tavernas and restaurants. And all performances were (bar one, which involved a cruise on a boat) free of charge to attend! This is an inexpensive time to visit and is certainly a major attraction for jazz lovers with the bonus of atmospheric surroundings, beautiful scenery and warm spring sunshine in this prettiest of villages. In 2025 this event will take place from 16th - 25th May.
Mani Swings with Summer Jazz: As the sun dips low in July, Kardamili comes alive with the Kardamili Jazz Festival. Picture this: balmy evenings filled with the sultry sounds of world-class jazz musicians. Let the music wash over you as you sip on a local Mani red and soak in the stunning scenery.
Words Take Centre Stage in October: If you're a bookworm, October is the time to visit Mani. The Mani Literacy Festival, held in the charming village of Stoupa, brings together writers, readers, and bibliophiles for a week of discussions, workshops, and author readings. Imagine cosy evenings spent exchanging ideas about your favourite novels, all against the backdrop of a traditional Mani village.
A Dance Extravaganza Awaits in Kalamata: While Mani itself doesn't host a major dance festival, the nearby city of Kalamata does. Just a short drive away, the Kalamata International Dance Festival explodes onto the scene in July. Witness an array of dance styles, from traditional Greek folk dances to contemporary ballet. Be mesmerised by the athleticism and passion of the performers, and maybe even feel inspired to take a dance class yourself!
Beyond the Big Names: Mani offers a treasure trove of smaller, unique festivals throughout the year. Visit the Panagia Pitiousa in August, a celebration of the assumption of Mary with processions, traditional music and “Labriano” stuffed lamb. Foodies won't want to miss the Chestnut Festival in Kastania in October, where roasted chestnuts take centre stage alongside local delicacies and lively music.
This is just a taste of the cultural riches Mani offers. With a little planning, you can find a festival that perfectly complements your holiday. Contact us today to plan your perfect trip.
