Well despite concerns from our friends regarding flying during the COVID crisis, we decided that we still needed our fix of beautiful Lemnos island, and we were definitely not disappointed! We were impressed with the enforcement of masks on the airline and the courtesy of other passengers and enjoyed what is now a short direct flight. On arrival one person from each family was tested for COVID whilst the bags were offloaded, Ray was tested, it was very quick and we were soon on the coach which was only half full.
When we arrived at the Sotiris Apartments it was very clear that COVID measures were in place and strongly adhered to, beginning with the hosts wearing masks and bottles of sanitiser dotted around the hotel. The rooms had been thoroughly cleaned with remote controls and the TV set newly clingfilmed to protect us. Extra bin bags were given to us if we wanted to remove our own rubbish although we did take our rubbish out to protect the staff we were still happy for them to clean as they were very thorough and always friendly, making us feel at home.
We were a little apprehensive about coming away during these uncertain times not sure what to expect but there was absolutely no need to have worried! Despite the local Greek people having to adhere to similar social distancing measures as we do in the UK they remained their usual kind, friendly selves, always trying to please. We thought they may be a bit wary of UK travellers due to our high infection rate but I can honestly say that we didn’t receive one nervous glance, one uncertain look or one sideways step without a knowing smile.
It was just so good to be back and just a couple of days in we were feeling totally relaxed and almost forgot the difficult times we had been through and the apprehension. Restaurants were slightly quieter as were the beaches but laughter could still be heard everywhere. No hugs as are usual here but the locals were quick to rush up with a welcoming smile and touch elbows with you.
The weather was just perfect, we stayed for 3 weeks and hardly saw a cloud. We think the beaches are beautiful on Lemnos, there is Plati a few miles from the town, nice sandy beach with a few tavernas and a water sports complex. There is the town beach which is around the harbour, again sandy and nice views. There is a good bar here which sells many beers, coffees and snacks. This beach has really been tidied up in the past 3 years and I would imagine could be due a blue flag. The harbour nearby also has many good restaurants.
Our favourite beach is called Riha Nera, which means 'shallow bottom', which is a very good description, this is a long sandy beach with a bar and a couple of restaurants. Manos at the far end has great food and lots of watersports are available here. The beach is quiet in the morning and gets busy after 3pm when the locals come down and the atmosphere becomes fun with lots of families enjoying the sea and sun.
We also like the shopping in Myrina which is very traditional, most shops line the vine-covered, cobbled main street. There are many small traditional shops here, butchers, bakers, fishmongers, hairdressers, haberdasheries, cafes etc. You get the impression that some of these shops have been operating in this street ever since it was built! It is really buzzing, especially mid morning with all the locals stopping in the street for a chat.
We have holidayed with Sunvil for 25 years, generally twice a year and even during these times the company continues to impress us with excellent representatives like Annette in Lemnos who really put their heart and soul into their jobs and do everything within their power to ensure you have the absolute best experience. Annette’s local knowledge is amazing and helpful and she is very kind. The accommodation on offer with Sunvil is second to none and the destinations are fabulous! We love the 'off the beaten track' places and places where you can really relax and get to know the locals. We enjoyed every minute of our holiday and will return again as soon as we are able to.
