Papanikolis Cave Papanikolis Cave

3. Visit the Papanikolis Cave

The remarkable Papanikolis Cave is actually the second largest cave in Greece. It is not an authentic sea cave, but a karst cave, and is presently partially inundated by the sea. This cave was much preferred by the ships that would drop anchor inside the cave during spells of inclement weather. This cave shot into prominence during World War II by virtue of being a secret hideaway for the submarine Papanikolis. The sheer magnitude of The cave is astounding. It is believed that the Papanikolis submarine would tuck up inside this mammoth cave after its blitzkrieg on the Italian armada. First-time visitors will live an awesome experience.

8. Experience local culture

Meganissi is an island with a strong sense of traditional customs. Throughout the year locals organise some great feasts to honour the saints of the island.

A feast that attracts many visitors is the 21st of May, celebrating Agios Konstantinos and Agia Eleni. Locals organise a rich open table with the best delicacies which are served to visitors.

The Feast of Sardines is held in the square of Vathy in July. This festival is celebrated every year with the accompaniment of the traditional orchestra. Roasted fish and local wine are offered as part of this celebration. As the name suggests, Sardines are the main dish of the festival.

On the 15th of August is the feast day of the Virgin Mary. After the litany of the icon, there is a large gathering with food, wine, and traditional dancing.

The trail winds through olive groves, past traditional stone houses, and up to the summit, where you’ll be greeted with panoramic views of the Ionian Sea and neighbouring islands. This hike is particularly beautiful at sunset, when the sky transforms into a vibrant palette of orange, pink, and purple. The peacefulness of the island at this time of day makes the journey even more magical. Don’t forget your camera—the views are unforgettable!
