1. Walk through one of the ancient world’s greatest engineering feats

The Tunnel of Eupalinos is one of the most remarkable achievements of ancient Greece. Built in the 6th century BC, this 1,036-metre-long tunnel was an underground aqueduct designed to supply water to the ancient capital of Samos. What makes it extraordinary is that it was excavated from both ends simultaneously—without modern surveying tools. Today, visitors can step inside this historic passageway and marvel at the precision of ancient Greek engineering.

2. Visit the sanctuary of Hera—A UNESCO World Heritage Site

The Heraion of Samos was one of the most important temples dedicated to Hera in antiquity. It once stood as a colossal structure with more than 100 columns, though only one remains standing today. The temple and surrounding archaeological site provide a glimpse into the religious and architectural grandeur of ancient Greece. Pair your visit with a stop at the Archaeological Museum of Samos in Vathy to see statues and artefacts discovered at the site.

3. Swim in hidden coves and blue waters

Samos boasts some of the most picturesque beaches in the Aegean, each with its own unique character.

  • Tsamadou Beach – A pebbled beach with deep turquoise waters, backed by lush greenery. One of the best places for a refreshing swim.
  • Livadaki Beach – A sheltered bay with shallow waters, ideal for relaxing or trying paddleboarding.
  • Potokaki Beach – A long stretch of sand near Pythagorio, where you can swim with a view of passing sailboats.

For those who love exploring off the beaten track, the coastline is dotted with hidden coves best reached by boat.

4. Discover waterfalls in the heart of the Samos Island, Greece

A short walk through shaded forests leads to one of Samos' most stunning natural sights—Potami Waterfalls. The route follows a stream, winding past old stone bridges before reaching a series of small waterfalls and pools. Visitors who are up for an adventure can wade through the water or climb wooden ladders to reach the higher cascades. The area is a refreshing escape from the heat, offering an unexpected side to Samos beyond its beaches.

5. Soak up the atmosphere in Samos’ villages

Beyond its coastline, Samos is home to charming villages, each with its own character:

  • Kokkari – A lively seaside village known for its traditional tavernas, colourful fishing boats and excellent windsurfing conditions.
  • Manolates – Hidden in the hills, this village is known for its local crafts, terracotta rooftops and breathtaking views over the island.
  • Pythagorio – Named after the mathematician Pythagoras, this historic port town is full of neoclassical buildings, lively cafés and ancient ruins.

Strolling through these villages is a chance to experience authentic island life, away from the busier tourist spots.
