As a self-professed aviation geek and a passionate Grecophile, Sunvil's Managing Director had been patiently awaiting the announcement of travel corridors, and the easing of travel restrictions by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, before taking his first flight of the season to his spiritual home. On Sunday 05 July he boarded a flight (via Poland) and travelled to the Ionian island of Corfu. He discovered a country prepared and ready to welcome guests and, in his opinion, the start of a summer season like no other - a once in a lifetime opportunity to experience Greece with the warmth of the summer sun and yet without the crowds.

Many tavernas and restaurants are open as well as historical sites and museums and, Chris firmly believes that this is the year to experience the real Greece and to connect with the country – after all, one of the things we have missed most during lockdown is personal interactions and connections.

Pre-holiday checklist

Travel post lockdown, at least initially, will require an acceptance that life has changed. From travelling to the airport to arrival in resort, you will notice that steps have been adopted to safeguard your wellbeing and that of the wider travelling community. You also need to accept that you cannot control everything - you must focus on those aspects of your journey that you can manage.

We have highlighted below some holiday items that you need to consider for any future trip.

Face masks, small hand sanitiser and antibacterial wipes for use whilst travelling and when required in resort (as per local guidance). Face masks are mandatory onboard aircraft and inside transfer vehicles, so we recommend that you practice wearing a mask for a long period of time prior to your departure.

Travel insurance remains as important as ever, if not more so. Please ensure that your policy covers you for cancellation pre-departure for Coronavirus (Covid-19) related events and also provides assistance overseas should the need arise. Snacks and a refillable water bottle for your journey. With limited shops and eateries open at the airport we recommend that you travel with enough provisions for your trip. You will find water refill stations after security (UK).
Contactless transactions are now the preferred method of payment across Greece. Please check that your debit/credit card allows transactions in this manner or consider sourcing a currency card.
Beach towels will not be provided by beach clubs and therefore should form part of your luggage, if required.

Chris is the Sunvil Group’s managing director and is not only responsible for the overall running of the company, the welfare of its staff, the fabric of the building, the efficient working of its computer systems but also for overseeing and contracting much of the accommodation on the GIC The Villa Collection programme. He is a very hands on managing director, a friend and helper to all, mad on aircraft and indefatigable. Chris joined The Greek Islands Club in 1993, after two years running a scouts’ holiday camp in Wales. He was responsible for maintaining The Club’s sailing boats on Paxos and generally acting as a rep for the villas. Sunvil Inherited Chris on purchasing GIC in 1998 and his abilities were quickly realised. He well deserves the top job.
