All for the love of travel | Our first arrivals in Greece

Have you been dreaming of a return to the dazzling shores of Greece, but with this dream comes slight apprehension as you don’t quite know what to expect? This of course is both natural and understandable; which is why we aim to provide an insight into travel post-lockdown, as our first clients begin to arrive in the Peloponnese and on the islands of Lemnos, Ikaria, Lefkas, Corfu, Paxos and Kefalonia.

At London Gatwick Airport our clients discovered its re-emergence; duty free, gift shops, stationers and pharmacies have now reopened. With the airport working hard to ensure a seamless transition from departure to airside. Face masks are worn by all, hand sanitiser dispensers available and social distancing practiced throughout. Speed and efficiency are phrases used to describe the process of going through security and on boarding the plane. During the plane journey itself, you can expect a reduced capacity, excellent cleanliness, mandatory face masks and even inflight refreshments which you can view on an app (EasyJet).

On arrival into Greece, all clients reported that they were asked to show their Passenger Locater Form (PLF) and then immediately directed to the baggage reclaim area. Although random Covid testing is carried out, those tested found the process quick and unobtrusive. All in all, the move from airport to transfer is very swift; met with the reassurance and guidance of our on-resort representatives

As you can see from the image below, guests are greeted with both safety and warmth. It is not mandatory to wear face masks within accommodation but advisory to keep at hand. You can still expect good old-fashioned Greek hospitality and delicious food within your hotel, although self-service has been removed.

Out and about in resort things are quiet, yet surprisingly normal - a welcome surprise after spending months in lockdown. Our client Susan (currently on Ikaria) can be quoted saying “on eating out last night in the village it was only the conversation about Covid that reminded you of it. That and the absence of the effusive hugs and kisses we are used to in greetings!”

Below clients are pictured enjoying a day on the beach, at a safe distance to others, with sun loungers wiped after use and refreshing drinks served by friendly masked waiters. Both tourists and locals alike relish dining al fresco at their favourite tavernas. Shops are now open too, and you can see people leisurely strolling down quaint, cobbled streets, stopping to buy a souvenir or two.

Chris is the Sunvil Group’s managing director and is not only responsible for the overall running of the company, the welfare of its staff, the fabric of the building, the efficient working of its computer systems but also for overseeing and contracting much of the accommodation on the GIC The Villa Collection programme. He is a very hands on managing director, a friend and helper to all, mad on aircraft and indefatigable. Chris joined The Greek Islands Club in 1993, after two years running a scouts’ holiday camp in Wales. He was responsible for maintaining The Club’s sailing boats on Paxos and generally acting as a rep for the villas. Sunvil Inherited Chris on purchasing GIC in 1998 and his abilities were quickly realised. He well deserves the top job.
