Limeni

Bathed in the Aegean sunshine, the rugged spine of the Mani Peninsula stretches southward from the Peloponnese. It is more than just a collection of stunning beaches. It's a place where history whispers from every stone, where fierce independence runs deep, and where the landscape itself seems to echo with ancient myths and legends. In our latest blog we unveil the top 10 sites that capture the essence of the Mani and ignite your wanderlust.

1. Diros Caves: A subterranean wonderland, the Diros Caves are a must-see. Glide through crystal-clear waters on a poled boat tour, marvelling at stalactites and stalagmites sculpted by time. The caves are said to be 400 million years old and amongst the finest in Europe.

2. Cape Tenaro (Matapan): Stand at the southernmost tip of mainland Europe's eastern coast, where legend has is the secret entrance to Hades, God of the Dead. Feel the power of the wind and the vastness of the sea as you contemplate the myths of the underworld.

3. Fortified Tower Houses: Scattered across the Mani are these iconic symbols of the region's turbulent past. Explore these defensive structures, imagining the fierce spirit of the Maniot people, descendants of the famed Spartan warriors. These very houses were built to withstand blood feuds and foreign invasions, a testament to the region's unwavering spirit.

4. Viros Gorge: Lace up your hiking boots and explore the Viros Gorge, a paradise for nature lovers and one of the best walks in Greece. Lush vegetation, cascading waterfalls, old hamlets, and breathtaking views of the Messinain Coastline and Taygetos Mountains await you on this beautiful hike above Kardamili. A really memorable, inspiring walk. 11km or so, 4hrs +.

5. Mani Villages: Travel back in time as you wander the cobbled streets of Mani's many villages, many clinging precariously to the mountainsides. Discover traditional houses, charming squares, and a glimpse into the timeless way of life that has persevered for generations.

6. Byzantine Churches and Chapels: History buffs will be enthralled by the wealth of tiny Byzantine churches and chapels scattered throughout the Mani. Admire the well-preserved frescoes adorning the walls, each one a testament to the region's rich religious heritage. Look for depictions of religious scenes or local saints.

7. Kardamili: This picturesque seaside village offers a charming blend of tradition and tourist amenities. Stroll along the harbour, explore the shops selling local crafts, and soak up the laid-back atmosphere. Literature enthusiasts can pay homage to the famed travel writer Patrick Leigh Fermor at his restored 18th-century tower house. Learn about his life and immerse yourself in the rich literary history of the Mani.

8. Vathia (Vathy): Step into a time capsule in Vathia, a partially abandoned village with a haunting beauty. Explore the crumbling stone houses, some adorned with faded coats of arms, and wander deserted streets, imagining the vibrant life that once thrived here.

9. Gerolimenas: The tiny fishing village of Gerolimenas has a pebble beach, a handful of waterside tavernas and one of the most atmospheric hotels in the entire south. The road continues south, past the much photographed 'tower house village' of Vathia, and then loops up the eastern coast and back over to Areopolis, enabling a Deep Mani circuit to be easily completed.

10. Picturesque Limeni: South of Areopolis, you’ll come to the really lovely, much-photographed little fishing port of Limeni. The village and its environs are protected by the Hellenic Ministry of Culture. Here, you will find a handful of superb tower houses, our exceptional boutique hotel, and great local fish tavernas.

Planning Your Mani Adventure? The Mani is best explored during the spring and shoulder seasons (April-May or September-October) when the weather is pleasant and crowds are smaller. Beyond sightseeing, consider kayaking along the dramatic coastline, taking a hike, or attending one of many local festivals such as the Kardamili Festival.

The Mani is a place that awakens the senses and ignites the imagination. With its captivating history, breathtaking beauty, and enduring spirit, it promises you a holiday to remember. Call our team of experts on 020 8758 4758 to start planning your trip.
