Paxos is a walker's paradise, a small, emerald island in the Ionian Sea where ancient stone paths crisscross a landscape dominated by over a quarter of a million olive trees. Unlike many Greek islands, Paxos is less about sweeping sandy beaches and more about a rugged, intimate beauty. Walking here is a journey through a living museum, with its old donkey tracks, terraced groves and abandoned hamlets. The island's diminutive size means you can explore much of it on foot, discovering hidden coves, dramatic sea cliffs and secluded villages where time feels like it's stood still. The fragrant air, filled with the scent of wild herbs and citrus and the sound of birdsong are your constant companions.
Let us introduce you to the delights of walking on Paxos.
The Legacy of Ian Bleasdale
You can't talk about walking on Paxos without mentioning Ian Bleasdale. A long-time visitor and enthusiast, Bleasdale is credited with creating the definitive walking map and guide for the island. His "Bleasdale Walking Map of Paxos" is a cult classic among hikers (and, in fact, sits framed in our head office). Before his detailed map, many of the island's ancient paths were difficult to navigate. Bleasdale's work meticulously documented these old routes, transforming them into accessible trails for visitors. He helped unlock the island's interior, moving beyond the main villages and coastal roads to reveal Paxos's true soul.
Another excellent guide to walking on the island is the Sunflower walking guide. You'll also find the pathways marked on mobile walking apps.
